Job Summary: Caterpillar’s Motor and Generator Components team designs and develops multiple voltage and power class motors and generators used in CAT machines. As more CAT products become electrified, there is a growing need to develop a full product line of components to support them. Strong, cross organizational collaboration and technical curiosity will be a must in this fast-paced development environment. Electrification & Energy Solutions (E&ES) Division is seeking to fill a Senior Design Engineering Specialist to serve as a consultant and company expert for electric motors. This role will oversee motor product development to ensure all requirements are met through focused NTI, NPI and CPI process rigor. This Senior Design Engineering Specialist – Electric Motors and Generators will provide technical direction for a team of engineers to deliver motor, generator and resistor grid designs. With a focus on supporting existing production components and launching new products, there will be a focus on improving design rigor, providing guidance/direction on issue resolution, analysis & simulation and providing review of the mechanical aspects of our motors, generators and resistor grids. This role will focus on providing technical guidance that will improve the durability, lower cost and help define solutions for some our most challenging applications.

Requirements

Minimum of a Bachelors degree in Engineering (mechanical, electrical or related)
ePowertrain Systems experience and understanding of component trade-offs and system optimization.
Knowledge and experience in product development processes across the product lifecycle (NTI, NPI & CPI)
Extensive experience and knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
Expert knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
Expert knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.
Expert knowledge of the methodology and associated phases, activities and deliverables of product development life cycle in manufacturing organizations; ability to bring new or enhanced products to the marketplace.
Extensive experience and knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing.
Expert knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing or product development environment.

Nice To Haves

Experience in Supply Chain, Purchasing and Manufacturing Systems preferred
Experience with multiple RI, CI and E&T machine applications preferred

Responsibilities

Develop design parameters, performance characteristics, and technical specifications of products and components that satisfy customer needs and advance Safety Quality velocity and cost.
Guiding the evolution of the technical design, technical project planning, detail design, and development testing.
Participating in supplier selection and capabilities assessment.
Monitoring, exploring, and testing new technologies, materials, and components to understand product or process improvement opportunities.
Constructing and fabricating prototype equipment; overseeing materials selection, process optimization and process yield, as well as reliability testing and failure analysis.
