Senior Design Engineer
About The Position
AssemblyAI is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to lead the design and development of their product experience from end to end. This role involves creating and building interfaces for developers, such as the Playground and dashboard, and ensuring a high standard for the product's visual appeal, motion, and overall feel. The ideal candidate will possess a strong design background combined with practical frontend engineering skills, and a keen interest in exceptional product design for AI-native, developer-facing products. This is a cross-functional position requiring close collaboration with engineering, marketing, and sales teams, with the autonomy to take a concept from idea to a polished, shipped product without extensive specifications.
Requirements
- A strong portfolio showcasing shipped product work with demonstrated design taste and craft.
- Genuine UX and visual design ability, from concept to high-fidelity execution.
- Deep proficiency in Figma, capable of moving from low-fidelity exploration to high-fidelity, dev-ready designs and managing shared component libraries.
- Solid frontend engineering skills, with experience building production interfaces in modern React and TypeScript.
- Fluency with AI-assisted design and development, and an instinct for creating AI-native interfaces.
- Comfort operating in ambiguous environments and owning outcomes end to end.
Nice To Haves
- Motion design skills, with the ability to use animation and micro-interactions to enhance interface feel and guide attention.
- Illustration or visual storytelling ability, including creating original graphics, diagrams, or brand-aligned artwork.
- Experience designing for developer platforms or API-first products, with an understanding of what makes technical tools intuitive.
Responsibilities
- Own the visual and interaction design of core product surfaces and build them in production using React and TypeScript.
- Establish the standard for UX quality across the product, focusing on interaction states, motion, hierarchy, and the details that define a polished interface.
- Transform rough product ideas into polished, high-fidelity experiences, utilizing rapid prototyping to test direction before commitment.
- Shape and maintain the design system and visual language to ensure quality as the product scales.
- Collaborate directly with engineering and marketing on product direction and execution.
- Integrate AI tooling and agents into the workflow to enhance design and shipping efficiency.
