About The Position

The Senior Deckhand is responsible for maintaining vessels in a state of readiness to perform work for customers. This role involves performing tasks as directed by the captain, including handling heavy lines, climbing on and walking on barges and narrow walkways, and ensuring the deck is clean and all gear is properly stowed. The deckhand will also be responsible for making up tows, including multiple barge tows, and performing various other duties as trained and required by the captain or Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Requirements

  • Must be able to comprehend and respond to and carry out specific orders from the captain.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with captain, co-workers, dispatchers and customers.
  • Ability to learn safety awareness, injury prevention, and firefighting.
  • Must be able to read, speak and understand English over the telephone and/or radio.
  • Must be able to plan and prepare multiple meals for crews.
  • Must be physically fit enough to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, tighten winches, carry heavy items, kneel while painting or changing oil/filters, climb onto barges and upstairs to wheelhouse, bending and twisting during boat/barge tie-up.
  • Must possess and maintain US Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document (MMD) or Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC).
  • Must possess Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Must possess and maintain valid state driver's license.
  • Must possess and maintain valid passport.
  • Must join Union.

  • AB limited with a valid STCW endorsement is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain vessels in a state of readiness to perform work for customers.
  • Perform work as directed by the captain of the vessel.
  • Pull heavy lines, climb onto and walk on barges, boats, and narrow barge walkways.
  • Ensure the deck is hosed down and free of lines, with all gear put away when not in use.
  • Make up all tows, and multiple barge tows as directed by the captain.
  • Use the VHF portable radio.
  • Splice lines and perform lubrication services.
  • Properly tie off barge tows, raft tows, etc.
  • Give proper direction and distance signals and information.
  • Use equipment on the tug, including winches, capstan, peavey, pike pole, and pumps.
  • Fuel the tug.
  • Complete barge reports and engine room logs.
  • Paint the inside and outside of the tug on an ongoing basis.
  • Cook meals for crew members and prepare grocery orders and supply requisitions.
  • Check the engine room hourly for leaks, broken fuel and oil lines, etc.
  • Take readings on each watch and maintain engine room logs.
  • Drain water out of air tanks daily.
  • Check oil in auxiliary and main engines before starting.
  • Change oil and filter as needed.
  • Perform general maintenance as per the checklist, including greasing and starting equipment.
  • Wipe down the engine each night and keep the area clean and free of oil.
  • Tighten and grease/replace shaft packing before leaving the boat.
  • Take on fuel and water, and pump bilges.
  • Clean restrooms on the tug.
  • Prepare grocery/supplies lists.
  • Perform special duties and other projects as assigned.
  • Adhere to all company policies.
  • Accomplish all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested.
