Senior Database Systems Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple is seeking experienced Database Systems Engineers to join its Cassandra Integration team. Apple’s Cassandra organization develops and contributes to Apache Cassandra, an open-source distributed database that powers many of Apple’s critical internet services. The team works with modern database technology, distributed systems, and storage engineering to evolve Apache Cassandra at massive scale. Its work supports storage platforms used by iCloud, Media, Apple Store, and other Apple internet services, benefiting Apple product users and supporting current and future offerings. The Cassandra Integration team develops systems that are correct, reliable, scalable, and fast, applying innovation and rigorous engineering. Team members contribute to major Apache Cassandra open-source components and its ecosystem, including authentication and authorization, the control plane (Apache Cassandra Sidecar), bulk analytics (Apache Cassandra Analytics), and integrations throughout the Cassandra ecosystem.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience in database internals engineering or high-performance distributed systems.
  • Proficiency in modern Java, including concurrency, memory management, and garbage collection concepts.
  • Deep understanding of data structures and algorithms in storage systems.
  • Understanding of REST, HTTP, TCP/IP, and other critical internet protocols.
  • Understanding of the Big Data ecosystem.
  • Understanding of distributed-systems concepts, including fallacies of distributed computing, CAP, and FLP.
  • Understanding of database concepts, including consistency models, isolation levels, and crash and recovery semantics.
  • Performance engineering knowledge, including design concepts and profile-guided optimization.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to partner with Site Reliability peers, and a high degree of customer focus when working with internal platform customers.
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues in other locations.
  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in a computer science-related field, or equivalent work experience.
