Sr. Data Scientist- Operations Research
About The Position
Total Wine & More is seeking a Senior Data Scientist, Operations Research to join its Data Services team in Boca Raton, Florida. The role leads the design and deployment of optimization and decision science solutions that drive business outcomes across the company. It addresses complex, large-scale mathematical problems supporting strategic and operational decisions in areas such as pricing, inventory, supply chain, and marketing. The position translates business problems into formal optimization frameworks and delivers production-ready solutions, combining hands-on operations research expertise with data engineering and software skills. It reports to the Director, Data Science.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent years of experience.
- Master's degree in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent years of experience.
- Proficiency in Python and SQL, with an emphasis on scalable, maintainable code.
- Ability to design and maintain data pipelines for large-scale modeling workflows.
- Experience working with large, complex datasets, including feature engineering and data validation.
Nice To Haves
- 3–6 years of experience in Operations Research, optimization, or related fields.
- Hands-on experience with Gurobi, strongly preferred, or similar solvers such as CPLEX or OR-Tools.
- Proven experience building and deploying large-scale mathematical models, including LP and MILP, in production environments.
- Familiarity with cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or GCP for scalable execution.
Responsibilities
- Formulate decision problems as mathematical optimization models, including LP, MILP, and MINLP, translating business constraints and objectives into structured frameworks.
- Design and implement large-scale optimization models involving thousands to millions of variables and constraints.
- Use solvers such as Gurobi or equivalent tools to build high-performance solutions, including model tuning and performance optimization.
- Develop end-to-end decision systems that integrate optimization outputs into production workflows and business processes.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to define objective functions, constraints, and trade-offs and align solutions with real-world decision-making.
- Evaluate solution quality through scenario testing, sensitivity analysis, and stress testing.
- Scale and productionize models, including API development, automation, monitoring, and retraining workflows.
- Build and maintain data pipelines for optimization models, ensuring data quality, availability, and performance at scale.
- Communicate model structure, assumptions, and results to leadership, translating complex mathematics into actionable business insights.
