Senior Data Scientist

Headway•New York, NY
•$180,000 - $225,000

About The Position

Headway is hiring a Senior Data Scientist to help build the decision engine for better mental health outcomes. The role sits within a cross-functional product team and turns real-world data into actionable decisions by improving data capture, designing experiments, and translating findings into recommendations. Once insights are validated, the Senior Data Scientist helps operationalize them through predictive models that improve provider and patient experiences. Data Science at Headway is organized into Patient, Payer & Outcomes, and Provider pillars, with multiple pods hiring. The Patient group focuses on the care-finding and patient lifecycle experience, including consumer funnel analytics, experimentation, marketing science, ranking, matching, propensity, lifetime value, and attribution. Payer & Outcomes focuses on patient outcomes, provider-network safety and quality, and value-based care, using experimentation, causal modeling, forecasting, and sizing. The Provider group focuses on what attracts providers, supports retention and growth, and builds provider trust, including product and go-to-market analysis and models for lifetime value, attribution, churn, and provider responses to rates and incentives. The expected base pay range is $180,000–$225,000, depending on qualifications, experience, and geographic location. The role may also be eligible for an equity grant, depending on position and level. Headway offers a comprehensive rewards package that includes health and wellness benefits, retirement savings, and equity ownership opportunities.

  • Strong SQL skills and strong proficiency in Python or R for analysis and modeling.
  • Depth in experimentation and causal inference under real-world constraints.
  • Fluency using AI tools, including LLMs and coding assistants, to accelerate analysis, prototyping, and documentation while retaining ownership of judgment and rigor.
  • Practical modeling skills, including feature engineering, model comparison, cross-validation or backtesting, calibration, and post-launch monitoring.
  • Strong product sense and opinions, with a track record of connecting analytics recommendations to measurable outcomes.
  • Clear communication skills, including the ability to explain complex work to non-technical audiences accurately.
  • Self-starter mindset, ability to prioritize and follow through, and ability to work without heavy oversight.

  • Design and analyze A/B tests and quasi-experiments, including hypotheses, power considerations, and predefined success criteria.
  • Use funnel, cohort, segmentation, and lifecycle analysis to understand patient and provider experiences and identify high-impact product opportunities.
  • Apply causal inference methods, such as difference-in-differences, matching, and regression-based designs, when experiments are not possible, with principled uncertainty quantification.
  • Develop predictive models that operationalize validated insights, including feature development, validation, backtesting, calibration, launch criteria, and monitoring plans.
  • Produce clear, candid analyses and narratives that explain uncertainty and drive action.
  • Contribute to shared standards for metrics, experimentation, and analytical quality.
