About The Position

LMI is seeking a Senior Data Scientist specializing in Power BI to support our contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA). In this role, you will serve as the lead data visualization expert on a team responsible for translating large, complex, multi-source training and workforce datasets into polished, highly interactive Power BI dashboards that inform senior VHA leadership decisions on reducing administrative training burden across the nation's largest integrated health care system. You will own the design, build, deployment, and maintenance of executive-facing dashboards and reports, working closely with a small team to ensure every visualization is accurate, accessible, and immediately actionable for stakeholders ranging from front-line analysts to VHA senior executives. Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in data science, computer science, statistics, information systems, or a related quantitative field
• 8+ years of experience in data analytics or business intelligence, with deep, demonstrated expertise in Power BI dashboard design and development — this is a senior, visualization-first role and Power BI mastery is the top hiring priority
• Expert-level proficiency in DAX, Power Query (M), Power BI data modeling, and advanced visualization techniques (custom visuals, bookmarks, drill-through, tooltips, row-level security), with a portfolio demonstrating executive-caliber dashboard design
• Experience building reporting-ready data models from large, complex, multi-source datasets, and working with Microsoft SQL Server and the Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps) to support Power BI reporting
• Demonstrated ability to translate large, technical, multi-dimensional datasets into clear, polished, executive-ready visualizations for non-technical, senior-level audiences
• Familiarity with federal data governance and accessibility standards, including FISMA compliance, data security requirements, and Section 508 (WCAG 2.0 AA) accessible design
• Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams of program managers, developers, and researchers, and presenting directly to non-technical executive stakeholders
• Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for a U.S. Government security clearance. Only US Citizens are eligible for a security clearance. Nice To Haves

• Experience supporting VA or VHA data and reporting systems, particularly in workforce development, training/learning management, or human capital analytics
• Familiarity with VHA source systems such as the Talent Management System (TMS 2.0), HRSmart, or SharePoint Online, and how training/workforce data flows between them
• Experience building workload, capacity, or burden-reduction analyses (e.g., training hours per FTE, compliance gap analysis, cohort/trend analysis) in a federal program evaluation context
• Knowledge of Human-Centered Design (HCD), Human-Systems Integration (HSI), or User Experience (UX) methods as applied to dashboard and reporting design
• Proficiency in Python or R for supplemental statistical analysis, and experience with custom JSON formatting for SharePoint list views to enhance reporting usability
• Master's degree in data science, statistics, information systems, or a related field

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary Power BI developer for the program, designing, developing, and maintaining complex, highly polished dashboards and interactive reports that communicate training burden, compliance, and workforce development metrics to VHA senior leadership
• Create complex, advanced data visualizations (charts, graphs, dashboards) using Power BI and Python, applying best practices in visual design, accessibility, and usability to make dense training and workforce data intuitive for non-technical, executive audiences
• Create and maintain highly complex, reporting-ready data models — specifying required fields, data types, calculated values, and data sources — that support Power BI reporting without downstream rework, drawing on data from sources such as TMS 2.0, HRSmart, SharePoint, and custom .NET applications that use SQL Server data stores
• Collaborate with the data engineering and Power Platform team on underlying data model architecture, ensuring tight alignment between backend SQL Server/Power Platform logic and front-end Power BI visualizations
• Document visualization processes and maintain version control for all reports and dashboards; develop technical documentation, SOPs, and governance artifacts, and deliver train-the-trainer sessions to support stakeholder adoption and audit readiness
• Build and maintain standard templates, custom reports, and executive dashboards that communicate key performance indicators — including training completion trends, compliance gaps, and workload-per-FTE metrics — to inform VA senior leadership and Secretary-level reporting
• Perform rigorous quality checks on all visual outputs to verify correctness, accuracy, and alignment with business needs before delivery to VHA leadership
• Maintain and update existing dashboards in response to stakeholder feedback, new data sources, or evolving reporting requirements; support ad hoc and rapid-response reporting requests with quick, polished visual summaries
• Lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and validation for new and updated dashboards, developing test cases and coordinating resolution of defects and change requests; assume Quality Assurance responsibilities as needed
• Ensure all dashboards and visualizations meet VA security, FISMA, and Section 508 (WCAG 2.0 AA) accessibility requirements, and remain usable by stakeholders relying on assistive technologies
• Communicate insights clearly and compellingly to non-technical audiences, stay current on Power BI and visualization trends and tooling, and continuously improve dashboard design and functionality across the life of the contract

Benefits

• Target salary range: $112,000 - $145,000. Final compensation will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to your skills, experience, education, and/or certifications.
