Senior Data Scientist, Product
About The Position
Coinbase is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to partner with Product, Engineering, and Design to influence product roadmaps and understand users. Data Science contributes through experimentation, analytics, and advanced modeling to generate insights that affect business outcomes. Coinbase is remote-first but not remote-only, with quarterly in-person working sessions called “surges.” The role involves investigating ambiguous business problems and translating findings into recommendations, building and evaluating machine-learning models and AI systems, and owning data and metrics from definitions and logging through visualization. The Senior Data Scientist also provides SQL and Python expertise, guides code reviews, maintains ETL jobs, and promotes statistical rigor through experimentation and causal analysis.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in a quantitative field, such as Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or Computer Science, with at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in a quantitative field with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience driving impactful data science projects in ambiguous problem spaces.
- Ability to influence stakeholders by synthesizing data insights into compelling stories.
- Practical expertise applying complex modeling frameworks to business problems.
- Professional experience using SQL and Python.
- Experience working with digital products in an iterative development cycle.
- Demonstration of clear communication, positive energy, continuous learning, and efficient execution.
- Responsible use of generative AI, with human oversight to deliver business-ready analytical outputs and models.
Responsibilities
- Conduct analysis and deep dives on ambiguous business problems, producing insights and recommendations to guide team decisions.
- Build, tune, or measure the performance of online and offline machine-learning models and AI systems used across Coinbase.
- Own a broad scope of data and metrics, from definitions and core logging to data visualizations.
- Guide code reviews, provide SQL and Python expertise, and create well-maintained ETL jobs.
- Design, execute, and improve experimentation and causal analyses while maintaining statistical rigor and stakeholder confidence.
