About The Position

Much Better Adventures is a certified B Corp that offers small-group adventure holidays run by local, independent guides in wild places worldwide. They are a community and VC-backed scale-up in the travel sector, operating as a remote-first team. The company is building an AI-first data team and has developed a modern data platform using Snowflake, dbt, Dagster, and AWS infrastructure as code. This role offers the opportunity to own and shape the future direction of this platform from day one, working in a fast-paced environment that values thoroughness, testing, monitoring, and well-reasoned infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Strong SQL skills and hands-on production experience with a cloud data warehouse (Snowflake preferred, BigQuery or Redshift acceptable).
  • Solid dbt experience, including incremental models, tests, macros, and project structuring for growth.
  • Consistent data instrumentation and collection for web tracking, with hands-on Segment experience, including ownership of the event schema for clickstream data.
  • Confident Python programming skills for writing ingestion, orchestration, and service code.
  • Experience with a modern orchestrator (Dagster, Airflow, Prefect, or similar), including operational aspects like retries, backfills, and freshness.
  • Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code and cloud fundamentals, ideally AWS with CDK or Terraform.
  • Comfort working independently in a remote team, with strong organizational, self-motivation, and prioritization skills.
  • Deep comfort and experience working natively with AI tools, including understanding their benefits, limitations, and validation methods.
  • Experience chaining systems together through MCP for direct interaction between AI assistants (like Claude or ChatGPT) and warehouse, repo, and tooling.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with dlt.
  • Experience building ingestion from marketing and CRM APIs.
  • Familiarity with BI tooling, specifically Hex and Metabase.
  • Experience with TypeScript for infrastructure.
  • Experience in the e-commerce or travel industry, or broadly in marketplace and subscription businesses.

Responsibilities

  • Owning the Snowflake warehouse and the dbt project, including approximately 300 models across raw, transformation, and warehouse layers, with extensive data tests, versioned model contracts, and semantic definitions.
  • Managing the data pipelines for key business metrics such as commissions, cancellations, bookings, and marketing attribution.
  • Overseeing daily data ingestion from around 25 sources using dlt and Dagster, including sources like Segment, HubSpot, Google Ads and Analytics, Meta, and TikTok, along with associated assets, schedules, sensors, and freshness checks.
  • Managing AWS infrastructure defined in CDK, including Step Functions, Lambda, S3, Athena, and Iceberg, with integrated lineage and monitoring.
  • Leading observability efforts in Datadog, including defining dashboards and monitors as code, monitoring Snowflake usage and costs, and setting up alerts.
  • Ensuring the health and reliability of the data platform, including troubleshooting issues and implementing preventative measures.
  • Utilizing AI tools throughout the workflow and contributing to the operationalization of AI within the data team.
