About The Position

At CareMessage, data is crucial for understanding our impact on low-income populations. Every interaction generates data that informs decisions for our teams and customers, ultimately advancing health equity. As the Senior Data Platform Engineer, you will be instrumental in ensuring the reliability and security of our data infrastructure, which runs on Google Cloud. You will own the Google Cloud infrastructure, ensuring pipelines are dependable, patient information is protected, and innovative ideas are transformed into trusted, production-ready solutions. This role is a core part of our Data team, collaborating with Data Scientists, Data Analysts, Infrastructure engineers, and Clinical Integrations engineers. The data platform utilizes BigQuery, Datastream, Cloud Run, a dbt-layered warehouse (bronze, silver, gold), and is being migrated to Terraform and CI/CD. You will lead this migration within our existing architecture and company goals, building a secure and confident data foundation for everyone at CareMessage.

Requirements

  • Deep, hands-on expertise in Google Cloud for data infrastructure, including production experience with BigQuery, IAM, service accounts, and serverless compute like Cloud Run.
  • Proficiency in managing infrastructure as code using Terraform or equivalent, with experience in CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions) for data infrastructure deployment.
  • Experience owning a production data platform end-to-end, including ingestion (change data capture), a layered warehouse, and monitoring.
  • Ability to write production-quality SQL and Python.
  • Experience protecting sensitive data with code-defined controls like least-privilege IAM, column-level security, policy tags, and automated drift detection.
  • Proven ability to accelerate data science and analysis teams by removing infrastructure bottlenecks.
  • Commitment to health equity and a desire to use engineering skills to serve low-income populations, with the ability to articulate how reliable, protected data supports this mission.

Responsibilities

  • Own our Google Cloud data infrastructure as code, managing BigQuery datasets, Datastream, Cloud Run functions and jobs, service accounts, and IAM using Terraform and adhering to Infrastructure team standards.
  • Build and manage CI/CD pipelines for data workloads, ensuring all deployments go through code review.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting for data freshness and failures, focusing on fixing root causes.
  • Maintain consistency and reproducibility between staging and production data environments through code.
  • Protect patient data by default through PHI classification, column-level policy tags, masked views, least-privilege IAM, and secure defaults like internal-only ingress.
  • Run automated checks for untagged PHI columns, drifted permissions, or publicly reachable services, with proactive alerting.
  • Collaborate with Infrastructure and Compliance teams on access reviews, audits, and migration runbooks.
  • Provide safe, self-serve environments for data exploration and development, including masked data and a clear path to production.
  • Facilitate the deployment of data team work into production, including critical reporting for strategic plans.
  • Assist the Data team in moving their work from analysis to reliable, scheduled production jobs.
  • Remove infrastructure bottlenecks to allow the Data team to focus on analysis.
  • Document the platform with runbooks, definitions, and lineage to ensure usability and trust.
