About The Position

Idaho Power is seeking a motivated Senior Data Engineer to join our Information Technology team in Boise, Idaho. This role is crucial for providing communities with safe, reliable, and affordable energy. The Senior Data Engineer will design, build, and maintain scalable data solutions, translating business processes into a medallion architecture (bronze, silver, gold layers). They will leverage Microsoft Synapse, Microsoft Fabric, and Power BI to develop data pipelines, integrate diverse data sources, and ensure data quality, consistency, and performance. The position requires expertise in data modeling, transformation, dimensional modeling, and enabling raw data into curated, business-ready datasets for analytics and self-service BI. Collaboration with business stakeholders, analysts, and data scientists is key to understanding analytics needs and transforming them into optimized data models and semantic layers. The engineer will use modern Microsoft data platform capabilities, including dataflows, notebooks, pipelines, and lakehouse/warehouse architectures, to deliver reliable and scalable solutions. Responsibilities also include performance tuning, data governance, source control, and continuous improvement of data processes to support Power BI dashboards and enterprise reporting.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL/ELT) processes and tools such as Azure Data Factory / Synapse Pipelines, Microsoft Fabric Data Pipelines, Power BI Dataflows Gen2, Power Query, etc.
  • Knowledge of Medallion architecture design patterns (bronze, silver, gold) and lakehouse/warehouse concepts.
  • Knowledge of Relational and distributed data systems, including dimensional modeling and semantic layer design.
  • Knowledge of BI visualization and reporting tools, primarily Power BI, including dataset modeling and performance optimization.
  • Knowledge of Azure and Microsoft analytics ecosystem, including Azure Synapse and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Knowledge of Data governance, lineage, and security concepts within modern data platforms.
  • Knowledge of Enterprise solution development practices and tools (Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, Agile/Kanban methodologies).
  • Strong SQL development for data transformation and optimization.
  • Experience with Python and/or Spark for data engineering workloads.
  • Experience with Data modeling for analytics, including transforming curated data into business-ready structures.
  • Experience with Power BI development, including data modeling, Data Analysis Expressions (DAX), and visualization best practices.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Problem solving, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis in complex data environments.
  • Organization and prioritization across multiple data initiatives.
  • Ability to work proactively in a collaborative team environment with minimal supervision while owning deliverables end-to-end.
  • Ability to translate complex business processes into scalable data solutions within a medallion architecture framework.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to evolving technologies within the Microsoft data ecosystem.
  • Ability to learn and understand business domains to align data models with organizational needs.
  • Ability to think critically, diagnose issues across distributed systems, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to be resourceful, resilient, and continuously improve data processes and platform performance.
  • BS in Computer Science and 3 years of directly relevant experience and/or formal, targeted hands-on training OR 7 years of directly relevant experience and/or formal, targeted hands-on training.
