About The Position

The Senior Data Engineer will analyze and translate high-level customer requirements into detailed designs to solve complex business problems. This role involves designing solutions that align with the long-term plan for a service or product, based on deep expertise and customer insights. The engineer will partner with various engineering teams to create and manage a long-term data and information architecture and execution roadmap. Responsibilities include defining data solutions, developing code across multiple products or services, and influencing architectural changes. The role requires ensuring consistent, usable, and forward-looking test infrastructure, drawing from a large base of design patterns, and being adept at identifying effective practices. A key aspect is identifying code across multiple code bases to optimize, refactor, and reuse for improved performance and maintainability, while ensuring maximum efficiency and return on investment. The Senior Data Engineer will lead code reviews, understand root causes of issues, and find ways to resolve them. Proactive identification of performance and availability issues, troubleshooting, and providing effective solutions in production are also critical. The role involves developing and maintaining thorough architectural documentation, designing products and services using secure programming patterns, and enhancing security in existing applications. Estimating projects that span multiple product areas, including work, time, resources, and skill needs, is required. The engineer will proactively identify new technologies or innovative uses of existing ones and construct proposed solution strategies. Mentoring and coaching other engineers through design and code reviews, sharing best practices, and seeking mentorship are important. Leading the definition of the engineering lifecycle and practices, driving collaboration across multiple teams, and anticipating business needs by presenting options to leadership and stakeholders are also key responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned according to team and/or country-specific requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IS, MIS, or other technology degree or minimum of 4 years of equivalent work experience and high school diploma/GED
  • Minimum 6 years of experience developing and implementing commercial software across several platforms while leveraging a variety of programming languages
  • Experience in owning and delivering projects and results of increasing technical complexity
  • Experience working on large-scale data sets in a commercial environment
  • Experience building and modeling data in relational and non-relational data storage technologies including schema design, stored procedure development and performance and optimization techniques (e.g. SQL Server, Postgres, Mongo, Cosmos, etc.)
  • Experience implementing and designing data acquisition, data curation, and data analysis
  • Experience with unit, integration, and acceptance testing
  • Experience with version control systems (ex. GIT, GitHub, TFS, etc.)
  • Experience with HTTP and REST architecture
  • Experience with CI/CD continuous integration / continuous deployment practices
  • Experience orchestrating data transformation through cloud native platforms (ex. Azure, AWS, GCP)
  • Experience with data streaming architecture and frameworks (Kafka, ESB)

Responsibilities

  • Partner with various engineering teams to create and manage a long-term data and information architecture and execution roadmap for a product or service.
  • Define data solutions and develop code across multiple products or services, as well as, influence or drive architectural changes.
  • Ensure consistent, usable, forward-looking, maintainable test infrastructure; draw from a large base of design patterns, is an expert in available technologies, and is adept at identifying practices that work well.
  • Identify code across multiple code bases to optimize, refactor, and reuse code to improve performance and maintainability while ensuring maximum efficiency, effectiveness, and return on investment.
  • Lead code reviews across the product or service, understand the root causes of issues, and find ways to resolve them.
  • Proactively identify performance and availability issues, troubleshoot, provide effective options, and resolve issues in production that could span multiple product areas.
  • Develop and maintain thorough architectural documentation for the product or service.
  • Design products or services by using secure programming patterns and by finding, fixing, and enhancing security in existing applications.
  • Ensure security best practices are part of design and implementation of new features and applications.
  • Estimate for projects that span multiple product areas including work, time, resources and skill needs.
  • Proactively identify technologies or solutions that differ from current technology stack or represent innovative uses of existing technologies.
  • Construct and deliver proposed solution strategies for potential new technologies and work with architecture to review and approve proposals.
  • Mentor and coach other engineers by participating in design and code reviews and share best practices; proactively seek mentorship from others.
  • Lead the effort in defining the engineering lifecycle and practices for team and associated teams in partnership with the principal data engineer.
  • Drive collaboration across multiple teams; find ways accomplish more by enabling others.
  • Anticipate business needs and present options to leadership and business stakeholders with product managers.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned according to the team and/or country specific requirements.
