About The Position

Westland Insurance Group Ltd. is growing and has a new opportunity for a Senior Data Engineer, Data Platform & Operations. This role is a hybrid role based out of our head office in Surrey, BC. We're looking for a technically skilled and collaborative professional who is excited to help shape the future of Westland's enterprise data ecosystem. As a Senior Data Engineer, you'll play a key role in designing and delivering modern data solutions that support analytics, reporting, and advanced data initiatives across the organization. Working with technologies including Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, Apache Spark, and Delta Lake, you'll help build the trusted, scalable, and governed data foundation that enables teams across Westland to make data-driven decisions with confidence.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering, helping to design, build, and optimize enterprise data platforms, pipelines, and data products.
  • Strong expertise in SQL, Apache Spark (PySpark), Azure Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, and modern cloud-based data engineering practices.
  • Experience designing data lakes, warehouses, lakehouse architectures, and analytics-ready datasets that support reporting, analytics, and business decision-making.
  • Passionate about building scalable, reliable, and secure data solutions, with a focus on performance, governance, operational excellence, and data quality.
  • Experience with enterprise data governance frameworks and tools such as Microsoft Purview.
  • Effective communicator who can collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders, while mentoring others and contributing to engineering best practices.
  • Embrace continuous learning and stay current with evolving technologies.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Power BI and Azure Synapse is considered an asset.
  • Industry certifications such as Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional or Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203) are considered assets.
  • Experience within the P&C insurance industry is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and data products that support reporting, analytics, AI initiatives, and enterprise decision-making.
  • Build and optimize solutions using Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks, Apache Spark (PySpark), SQL, and Delta Lake while implementing modern data architectures and modelling practices.
  • Deliver trusted, governed datasets by implementing data quality, lineage, security, and access controls that support enterprise data management standards.
  • Partner with Data Products & Enablement, Data Business Partners, and technology teams to develop innovative solutions that address business challenges and opportunities.
  • Monitor, maintain, and continuously improve enterprise data platforms through automation, alerting, troubleshooting, and performance optimization to ensure reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
  • Champion engineering excellence through CI/CD, testing, documentation, version control, and secure development practices.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship while driving continuous improvement across data platforms, processes, and technologies.
