About The Position

Key Responsibilities: Data Catalog & Enablement Leadership Lead the management of the Alation data catalog as the enterprise system of record for analytic datasets, metrics, and business definitions. Evolve the catalog into a data marketplace by improving discoverability, usability, and trust of data assets. Define standards and best practices for dataset documentation, certification, tagging, and stewardship . Partner with data engineering and analytics teams to ensure new and existing datasets are cataloged accurately and consistently. Data Governance & Metadata Management Apply deep knowledge of data governance principles , including metadata management, data lineage, ownership, and data quality frameworks. Ensure business and technical metadata are complete, meaningful, and aligned with enterprise standards. Collaborate with Data Owners, Data Stewards, and Governance Councils to reinforce accountability for data assets. Support policy enforcement related to data usage, classification, and compliance through the catalog. Cross-Functional Collaboration Serve as a trusted advisor to business users, analysts, and engineers , translating technical metadata into business-friendly language. Influence adoption of governed, self-service analytics by working across domains without direct authority. Act as a connector between technical teams and business stakeholders to align data assets to business outcomes. Data Literacy & Adoption Champion data literacy by enabling users to understand how data is produced, defined, and used. Create and promote guidance, standards, and training materials that help users confidently find and interpret data. Analyze catalog usage and engagement metrics to continuously improve adoption and value realization. Technical Enablement Use SQL to explore datasets, validate metadata accuracy, and support data understanding. Develop familiarity with modern data warehouses and analytics ecosystems (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift). Partner with data platform teams to integrate lineage, profiling, and quality signals into the catalog.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a data-focused role such as Data Governance, Data Stewardship, Data Management, or Senior Data Analyst
  • Proven experience operating in complex, enterprise data environments.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience administering, curating, and enhancing the Alation data catalog
  • Experience designing scalable catalog structures, stewardship workflows, and adoption strategies.
  • Strong understanding of: Data governance frameworks Metadata management and lineage Data quality concepts and controls Ability to apply governance in a practical, enablement-focused way rather than as pure compliance.
  • Strong SQL skills for querying and validating data.
  • Solid understanding of modern data warehouse platforms (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift).
  • Comfort working with analytics, BI, and data engineering teams.
  • Exceptional ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable language for non-technical audiences.
  • Proven collaborator who can influence without authority and build trust across business and technology teams.
  • Confident facilitator of discussions around data standards, definitions, and best practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Analytics, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
