Senior Data Center Commissioning Engineer

About The Position

Armada is hiring a Senior Data Center Commissioning Engineer to support its Galleon, Leviathan, and Orion modular data center product lines. This hands-on senior individual-contributor role owns commissioning from factory acceptance testing through site start-up, functional testing, Integrated Systems Testing (IST), and operational handover, ensuring systems perform as designed before customer acceptance. The engineer will build Armada’s commissioning program from the ground up, developing plans, test scripts, and turnover standards for Level 1 through Level 5 commissioning across medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution, UPS and battery energy storage, liquid and air cooling, BMS/EPMS controls, and fire and life safety systems. Since products are factory-built, the role emphasizes moving as much testing as possible to factory and integrator facilities so site work can focus on integration and verification. The engineer will write procedures, lead and witness tests, coordinate with customers and project partners, and provide commissioning feedback to product engineering. The position is remote in the United States and requires approximately 40–50% travel to domestic and international project sites, factory/integrator facilities, and vendor locations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent hands-on commissioning experience.
  • 8+ years of commissioning experience on mission-critical facilities, including at least 5 years on data center projects.
  • Hands-on leadership of Level 4 and Level 5 commissioning, including functional performance testing and IST.
  • Deep, hands-on commissioning expertise in either electrical systems (MV/LV switchgear, UPS, BESS, transfer schemes, generators, protective relaying) or mechanical and controls systems (chillers, air handling, liquid cooling and CDUs, BMS/EPMS sequences), with strong working knowledge of the other.
  • Working knowledge of commissioning standards and codes, including ASHRAE Guideline 0 and Standard 202, NETA ATS, NFPA 70/70E, NFPA 72, and Uptime Institute methodologies.
  • Experience writing commissioning plans, test scripts, and turnover documentation, not only executing them.
  • Ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy and define commissioning processes.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 40–50% to project sites, factory/integrator facilities, and vendor locations.

Nice To Haves

  • Commissioning certification such as CxA (ACG), BCxP (ASHRAE), CCP (BCA), or CBCP (AEE); a Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
  • Commissioning experience with modular, prefabricated, or containerized data centers, including factory acceptance testing at integrator facilities.
  • Experience commissioning high-density, liquid-cooled AI/GPU deployments, including direct-to-chip cooling, CDUs, technology cooling systems, flushing, filtration, and fluid-quality programs.
  • Experience with BESS, GPU power stabilization, load-step and ramp-rate testing, and utility interconnection requirements such as ERCOT.
  • Experience on the hyperscale owner, colocation, or commissioning-agent side, leading IST on large-scale (10 MW+) facilities.
  • Experience with commissioning management platforms such as CxAlloy, CxPlanner, or Facility Grid; Procore or Autodesk Construction Cloud; and test equipment such as load banks, power-quality analyzers, and thermal imaging.
  • Experience establishing commissioning standards, templates, or governance processes for a growing team or product portfolio.
  • NFPA 70E qualified person training and OSHA 30.

Responsibilities

  • Build and own Armada’s commissioning program using ASHRAE Guideline 0, Standard 202, and the Level 1 through Level 5 testing framework; develop commissioning plans, OPR/BOD alignment, pre-functional checklists, functional performance test scripts, IST procedures, and turnover requirements.
  • Define and lead factory acceptance testing, including integrated FAT of complete modules, at integrator and vendor facilities for modules, e-houses, skids, and major equipment such as switchgear, UPS, BESS, CDUs, chillers, and controls.
  • Lead site commissioning, including receipt inspection, pre-functional checks, start-up, functional performance testing, and IST.
  • Conduct or oversee load bank testing, failure-mode and transfer scenarios, liquid-cooling flushing and fluid-quality verification, and GPU load-step and ramp-rate testing; manage issues through closure.
  • Write test procedures, witness and run tests, analyze trend and power-quality data, and troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and controls systems.
  • Serve as commissioning point of contact for customers, third-party commissioning agents, general contractors, and OEM vendors; coordinate witness schedules and readiness reviews, direct vendor start-up, and align scope with the Armada/customer responsibility matrix.
  • Own turnover packages, including test records, as-builts, O&M manuals, warranties, and training, and provide final commissioning sign-off for operational handoff.
  • Feed failures, lessons learned, and test data back to product engineering to improve commissioning across product generations.
