About The Position

Sentara is seeking an experienced Senior Cybersecurity Engineer to join its Cybersecurity Engineering team. The engineer will design, implement, optimize, and support enterprise security technologies across a large, complex environment. The immediate focus is Secure Service Edge (SSE), Zero Trust, and Zscaler technologies, with work also spanning network security, cloud, identity, and endpoint security initiatives. This is a hands-on engineering role requiring technical troubleshooting expertise, strong networking fundamentals, security knowledge, and technical leadership. The engineer will own complex problems and drive initiatives from architecture and design through implementation, production stabilization, and operational handoff. The role calls for understanding how security technologies work, identifying causes of failures, and collaborating across teams to resolve issues. The role also includes translating architectural direction into scalable technical solutions, identifying risks and operational considerations, leading cross-functional discussions, communicating technical findings and recommendations to varied audiences, mentoring engineers, and finding opportunities to improve automation, reliability, processes, and operational support.

Requirements

  • Extensive hands-on cybersecurity engineering experience supporting SSE/SASE, Zero Trust, network security, cloud security, or related enterprise security technologies.
  • Strong experience with Zscaler technologies, including ZIA, ZPA, ZCC, ZDX, GRE/IPsec tunnels, SSL/TLS inspection, proxy/traffic forwarding, and policy troubleshooting.
  • Strong networking and troubleshooting expertise across TCP/IP, DNS, routing, firewalls, VPN, PKI/certificates, HTTP/HTTPS, proxies, and application connectivity, including packet and log analysis.
  • Experience with enterprise identity and cloud technologies, including Microsoft Entra ID/Active Directory, SAML, OAuth/OIDC, MFA, Conditional Access, and Azure or comparable cloud platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex security implementations and production troubleshooting from architecture/design through implementation, stabilization, documentation, and operational handoff.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Zscaler, CCNP/CCIE, PCNSE, Microsoft Security/Azure, CISSP, or Security+ certification.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of complex technical issues and use a methodical, evidence-based approach to identify root causes and drive resolution.
  • Translate architectural direction into scalable technical solutions, accounting for risks, dependencies, and operational considerations.
  • Lead cross-functional technical discussions and troubleshooting with cybersecurity, network, cloud, identity, endpoint, and infrastructure teams.
  • Communicate technical findings, risks, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, leadership, and vendors.
  • Mentor engineers, promote knowledge sharing, and identify opportunities to improve automation, reliability, processes, and operational support.
  • Design, implement, optimize, and support enterprise security technologies, with an immediate focus on SSE, Zero Trust, and Zscaler.
  • Lead complex security implementations and production troubleshooting from architecture and design through implementation, stabilization, documentation, and operational handoff.
