The Cyber Engineering team at American Express is seeking a dynamic engineer for the role of Frontend engineer within the Information Security organization. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop advanced UI/UX capabilities involving emerging technologies, including Generative AI, to stay ahead of the evolving cyber threat landscape and protect American Express's digital assets.

Requirements

• Associates or BS degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other related field (or equivalent 5+ years of work experience)
• 8+ years of experience with strong focus on frontend or full-stack technology.
• Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, and React, NextJS with experience building accessible, responsive, high-performance web applications.
• Experience with modern frontend styling approaches and frameworks, such as Tailwind CSS, Sass, Less , CSS Modules, or similar technologies.
• Experience designing and building reusable UI components, design systems, and composable frontend platforms that can scale across products and teams.
• Deep expertise in modern frontend architecture and engineering, including state management, asynchronous and reactive UI patterns, performance optimization, rendering strategies, and micro-frontend or modular/composable UI architectures.
• Experience designing and implementing AI-driven interaction patterns, including conversational interfaces, copilot-style assistance, command- or intent-driven interactions, and dynamically generated or adaptive user experiences.
• Strong understanding of prompt engineering, context management, conversation/session state, tool invocation, and streaming response UX, including techniques for handling latency, partial responses, errors, and interruptions gracefully.
• Experience building real-time and streaming user experiences, including incremental rendering, asynchronous state updates, optimistic UI, and event-driven interactions.
• Understanding of human-in-the-loop interaction patterns, feedback mechanisms, user control, AI transparency, and explainability principles for trustworthy AI-powered experiences.
• Experience defining and instrumenting AI/agentic UX metrics, such as time-to-first-response, end-to-end latency, task completion rate, response quality, user engagement, error/recovery rates, and user trust signals.
• Ability to design user experiences that effectively communicate agent state and activity, including planning, progress, tool execution, confirmations, errors, and completion states.
• Experience implementing appropriate guardrails and user controls for AI-powered experiences, including confirmation patterns, permission boundaries, failure recovery, and graceful degradation.
• Experience with automated testing frameworks and practices, including unit, integration, component, and end-to-end testing using tools such as Jest, Vitest, Cypress, Playwright, or similar.
• Experience with modern frontend build systems, package management, and developer tooling such as Vite, Webpack, npm/pnpm/yarn, or equivalent technologies.
• Familiarity with modern product and UI design tools such as Figma, with the ability to collaborate effectively with product designers and translate design systems and prototypes into production-quality experiences.
• Proficiency with AI-assisted software development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, Gemini Code Assist, or similar coding agents, with the ability to effectively review and validate AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, accessibility, and maintainability.
• Hands-on experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, secrets management, and modern software delivery practices, using technologies such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or equivalent tools.
• Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in an Agile, cross-functional environment, navigate ambiguity, and adapt to evolving technologies, requirements, and priorities.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and technical leadership skills, with the ability to influence architecture and engineering practices and partner effectively with product, design, AI/ML, platform, and engineering teams.

Nice To Haves

• Familiarity with containerization and cloud-native technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes, is a plus.
• Experience with browser extension development and/or mobile application development is a plus.
• A portfolio, GitHub profile, or examples of previous work demonstrating experience designing and developing sophisticated user-facing applications is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design and build scalable, secure, accessible, and high-performance user interfaces across traditional and AI-powered applications.
• Own the end-to-end development of modern UI experiences , from architecture and implementation through testing, deployment, and continuous improvement.
• Build AI-driven and agentic experiences , including conversational, copilot-style, intent-driven, streaming, and human-in-the-loop interactions.
• Partner with product, design, AI/ML, backend, and platform teams to translate business and user needs into intuitive, cohesive digital experiences.
• Develop and evolve reusable UI components, design systems, and modular frontend architectures that accelerate development and ensure consistency across applications.
• Rapidly prototype, experiment, and iterate on new capabilities and interaction patterns, translating successful concepts into production-ready solutions.
• Continuously learn and adapt to rapidly evolving technologies, frameworks, AI capabilities, and UI paradigms.
• Champion engineering excellence through clean, maintainable, well-tested code, code reviews, performance optimization, accessibility, security, and continuous refactoring.
• Apply strong product and UX judgment , leveraging user research, prototypes, experimentation, analytics, and feedback to continuously improve user experiences.
• Drive performance, reliability, and quality through appropriate testing, observability, telemetry, and measurement of both traditional and AI-powered experiences.
• Drive innovation and technical direction by evaluating emerging technologies, challenging existing approaches, and influencing frontend engineering standards and best practices.
• Demonstrate strong ownership and autonomy , navigating ambiguity, prioritizing effectively, communicating trade-offs, and driving complex initiatives from concept through production.
