About The Position

Nova Scotia is rich in natural resources – including biodiversity, forests, provincial parks, and the land we manage. The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables is responsible for the development, management, conservation and protection of forest, parks and wildlife resources and the administration of the province's Crown land. Together we are working with Nova Scotians to build a better future through sustainable natural resource management as we all benefit from the natural health and wealth of the province. The Regional Services Branch delivers department programs and services through an extensive network of field offices. These programs and services include forest management programs, Crown lands surveys, regional geological services, public outreach and education, planning and implementing Integrated Resource Management (IRM), hunter safety, forest fire prevention, detection and suppression, monitoring of forest insects and diseases, operation and maintenance of Provincial Parks, and resource conservation. Under the general direction of the Area Manager, the Clerk 4 provides a broad range of administrative, financial, organizational and clerical support duties to the Area Manager and other DNR staff within the Area.

Requirements

  • Five years' related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.
  • Must be proficient in office software with proven experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook and web based applications.
  • Must possess the ability to work within deadlines and with accuracy.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Exceptional customer service, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP).
  • Experience using SAP or other equivalent.

Nice To Haves

  • Working in a computerized accounting environment
  • Experience and extensive knowledge of the Corporate Financial Management System (SAP), Salary Analysis System (SAS), Star/Stor system, and Pathways.
  • Knowledge of the Department financial processes and policies.
  • Familiarity with Department programs, statutes, regulations and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily financial and procurement services for the Area office
  • Prepare and process payments and approvals of all invoices, departmental purchase orders, journal vouchers, and petty cash statements
  • Prepare payroll, reconciliation, and assist the Area Manager in preparing accurate budget forecasting.
  • Maintaining local records within the Star/Store System format, and coordinating license data entry into the Wildlife Resources System
  • Providing administrative support to the Area Manager, Conservation Officers, Surveyors and Forest Technicians
  • Act as a backup for secretarial duties in the office, responding to inbound calls and providing general assistance to client reception, including the sale of permits and licenses as required and according to policies.
