About The Position

The Senior Credit Analyst is part of Institutional Risk Management within Credit Risk Management and serves as a second line of defense. The senior analyst researches and analyzes financial institution, clearing house entities, GSE and sovereign (country) credit fundamentals based on underwriting standards, assigns ratings within the context of credit policy, and recommends credits for approval. Financial institutions include foreign banks, and broker dealers. The senior analyst evaluates the financial institution’s operating environment, management, ownership, market position/concentration, financial performance, strengths/weaknesses, and trends in the context of the economic and political environment of the bank's domicile country (sovereign risk). The senior analyst establishes limits and conducts annual reviews for various counterparty activities for individual financial institutions and countries. Business lines supported include International Financial Institutions, Correspondent Banking, Foreign Exchange, Corporate Treasury, Capital Markets, Corporate Payment Systems, Mortgage, Leasing, Wealth Management, Trust, and others. The position regularly evolves to include credit approval responsibilities. Partners with their assigned Line of Business, other Risk/Compliance/Audit (RCA) professionals, and RCA Managers to, depending on their function, create, implement, maintain, review or oversee an effective risk management framework. Participates in projects and/or activities that ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Identifies gaps and inform solutions that minimize losses resulting from inadequate internal processes, systems or human errors. Identifies, responds and/or escalates risks as appropriate. Serves as a functional liaison between the Line of Business and the Lines of Defense.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience
  • Typically more than six years of applicable experience

Nice To Haves

  • Two to three years of counterparty credit underwriting experience, preferably within a larger financial institution managing complex institutional exposures.
  • Experience analyzing financial institutions, foreign banks, sovereign or country risk, broker-dealers, clearing organizations, or government-sponsored entities
  • Commercial credit underwriting experience may be considered when direct counterparty underwriting experience is not available.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, including the ability to evaluate complex information, market conditions, and global economic or political developments.
  • Strong interpersonal, relationship-management, collaboration, and influencing skills across multiple business lines and stakeholder groups.
  • Intellectual curiosity and an interest in global markets, economic developments, foreign banking systems, and country risk.

Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze the creditworthiness of financial institutions, foreign banks, broker-dealers, clearing organizations, government-sponsored entities, and sovereigns.
  • Perform due diligence and complete credit underwriting in accordance with established underwriting standards and credit policy.
  • Assess operating environment, management, ownership, market position, concentrations, financial performance, key strengths and weaknesses, and relevant trends.
  • Analyze sovereign and country risk, including the economic and political environment affecting counterparties.
  • Assign internal credit ratings and probability-of-default assessments and prepare well-supported recommendations for approval.
  • Establish, review, and manage credit limits for financial institutions, countries, and related counterparty activities.
  • Collaborate with Line of Business partners, Risk, Compliance, Audit, and other lines of defense to support an effective risk management framework
