About The Position

Humana is seeking a Senior Counsel to provide a full range of legal advice and services on matters of diverse scope and complexity, including counseling related to artificial intelligence (AI). The role supports the Law Department’s adoption of legal technology and AI, establishes best practices for responsible AI use by the department and outside counsel, and provides legal guidance on e-Discovery, records management, vendor diligence, and external reviews. The Senior Counsel also supports enterprise-wide AI initiatives by contributing to the development, governance, and implementation of safe and responsible AI systems. The position provides legal support for AI product and system development and deployment, advises on AI regulations and standards, and collaborates with company leaders and cross-functional teams to ensure compliance and manage risk. The Senior Counsel drafts AI guidance and governance materials, advises on responsible AI use within the Law Department and by legal service providers, and serves as a strategic partner to business clients and colleagues. The role calls for independent, efficient work under time pressure in a dynamic environment.

Requirements

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in an applicable jurisdiction.
Active good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
At least 7 years of relevant legal experience in a law firm and/or in-house counsel role.
At least 3 years of experience working within AI/ML, generative AI, and agentic systems.
Knowledge of federal and state AI regulatory compliance obligations, consumer protection, algorithmic bias and discrimination, antitrust, employment, intellectual property, data, and privacy.
Ability to identify risks and make sound risk recommendations while balancing rewards and business imperatives.
Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

Nice To Haves

Background in technology, legal technology solutions architecture, or consulting, including developing technical processes and solutions for electronically stored information.
Experience advising on policies, standards, and technical controls for discovery, information governance, and AI.

Responsibilities

Support legal reviews related to the development and deployment of AI products and systems.
Analyze and advise on AI regulations and standards, and collaborate with company leaders to support legal compliance and protection against AI risk.
Collaborate with AI product developers, engineers, data scientists, and business and legal teams; advise on applicable laws and ways to manage risk.
Draft AI guidance, playbooks, and governance materials.
Advise on responsible AI use within the Law Department, including confidentiality, privilege, accuracy verification, and human oversight.
Advise on standards, guidelines, and contract terms governing AI use by outside counsel and legal service providers.
Serve as a strategic partner and trusted advisor on legal and non-legal issues.
Communicate effectively with and influence business clients at all levels, including senior management.
Establish proactive, trustworthy relationships with clients and other Law Department members.
Work independently and efficiently under time pressures and deadlines in a dynamic, demanding environment.
Support the Law Department’s adoption of legal technology and AI and establish best practices for responsible AI use.
Provide legal support and guidance on e-Discovery, records management, vendor diligence, and external reviews.
Support enterprise-wide AI initiatives involving the development, governance, and implementation of safe and responsible AI systems.
