About The Position

Senior Counsel, Global Commercial Legal develops legal strategy for AbbVie’s Oncology medicines and partners closely with cross-functional teams to shape decisions that bring possibilities to patients ethically and effectively. The role applies legal experience to navigate regulatory complexity, assess risk, influence business outcomes, and provide expert counsel on decisions affecting commercial strategies. The successful candidate will address emerging issues with a strategic, creative, and business-oriented approach while developing leadership capabilities. The position advises AbbVie’s Oncology business unit on commercial, regulatory, and operational issues, including product and indication launches, patient support models, marketing strategies, promotion, scientific exchange, regulatory submissions, and managed healthcare contracting. It also supports legal policies, compliance programs, and training; collaborates with partners to manage risk and resolve disputes; advises on government policy initiatives; and translates legal, regulatory, and industry developments into actionable guidance. The role reports to a Sr. Associate General Counsel, Oncology Lead. The position is based at AbbVie’s U.S. commercial headquarters in Mettawa, Illinois or Florham Park, New Jersey, with a hybrid work model requiring onsite work three or more days per week.

Requirements

Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
Admission to the bar in at least one U.S. state and satisfaction of the professional licensing requirements of the state in which the candidate practices.
At least 5 years of relevant experience practicing in-house at a pharmaceutical company, at a nationally recognized law firm in a life sciences or healthcare practice, as an attorney for a government agency, or a combination of these.

Knowledge and understanding of pharmaceutical laws and regulations affecting drug registration and promotion, and the ability to help business clients assess issues in a highly regulated environment.
Strong business acumen and ability to balance legal risk with enterprise outcomes.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate legal complexity into business clarity.
Experience handling complex matters with autonomy and cross-functional collaboration.
Strong organization and time-management skills, with flexibility, creativity, and resourcefulness to prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities.

Responsibilities

Serve as a key legal advisor to cross-functional teams in AbbVie’s Oncology business unit on commercial, regulatory, and operational issues.
Advise on new product and indication launches, patient support models, marketing strategies, promotion, scientific exchange, regulatory submissions, and managed healthcare contracting strategies.
Provide legal, regulatory, and compliance advice to Marketing, Sales, Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, and other departments, including on FDA regulations, the False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, OIG guidance, the PhRMA Code, the Sunshine Act, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and competition law.
Support the development and implementation of legal policies, compliance programs, and training efforts.
Collaborate with internal and external partners to manage risk, resolve disputes, and influence outcomes.
Advise on government-related policy initiatives, including IRA, 340b, and PBM reform.
Translate legal, regulatory, and industry shifts into actionable guidance to influence strategic direction.
Help select and direct outside counsel, define project objectives, and manage projects.
