About The Position

The Senior Cost Accountant is a key member of the Finance team responsible for managing, analyzing, and improving product and inventory costing within a manufacturing environment. This role owns standard costing, variance analysis, work order costing, and inventory valuation accuracy, working closely with Operations, Engineering, and Supply Chain. The ideal candidate is experienced in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 F&O) and understands how operational activity flows through engineering routing, BOMs, production orders, and inventory into financial statements. This position plays a critical role in month‑end close, audit support, and continuous improvement of costing methods and controls.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of cost accounting experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands‑on experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 F&O) in a costing and manufacturing context.
  • Strong understanding of standard costing, BOMs, routings, production orders, variances, and inventory accounting.
  • Advanced Excel skills (variance analysis, reconciliations, large datasets).
  • Strong documentation skills and comfort working in audit‑reviewed environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior involvement in engineering change orders (ECOs) or operating model changes affecting cost.
  • Exposure to internal controls, SOX‑style environments, or external audits.
  • Manufacturing experience involving multi‑step production, machine rates, and labor absorption.

Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain product costing, including BOMs, routings, labor, overhead, and machine rates in D365 F&O.
  • Analyze manufacturing variances (material, labor, overhead, purchase price, production) and partner with Operations and Engineering to explain and resolve drivers.
  • Ensure accurate work order and production order costing, including proper closure and issue resolution.
  • Monitor and correct inventory valuation, WIP, and manufacturing absorption accounts.
  • Identify costing errors and lead root‑cause analysis, including corrective actions within D365.
  • Serve as the Finance subject‑matter expert for D365 F&O costing, inventory, and production modules.
  • Maintain and review cost categories, cost groups, shared categories, and ledger postings to ensure accurate financial impact.
  • Partner with IT, Engineering, and Operations on system changes, new items, routing updates, and master data governance.
  • Support testing and validation of costing changes, upgrades, and process improvements in D365 F&O.
  • Prepare and review month‑end journal entries related to inventory, WIP, labor absorption, overhead absorption, and variances.
  • Reconcile inventory and manufacturing balance sheet accounts and maintain supporting schedules.
  • Ensure manufacturing costs are accurately reflected in cost of goods sold and gross margin reporting.
  • Support internal and external audits with clear documentation, reconciliations, and process explanations.
