About The Position

Tipalti is looking to hire a seasoned and strategic senior attorney to lead and advise on a wide variety of employee relations issues and corporate matters. Reporting to the Senior Director of Corporate, the candidate will be the go-to legal partner for HR business partners and senior leadership on the full spectrum of employee and labor matters in Canada and the US, while also touching on corporate initiatives that support a fast-growing global company. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise, sound independent judgment, and the ability to build scalable legal frameworks in a fast-paced environment. They will be a proactive partner who anticipates issues before they escalate and can translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance for any audience.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor or Canadian LL.B./J.D. equivalent
  • 7 years of experience in private practice and/or in-house at a fast-growing or publicly traded company with a primary focus on employment law and corporate matters relating to Canada and the United States.
  • Employment litigation experience (e.g., wrongful dismissal, human rights complaints, agency proceedings) required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the business acumen to advise and influence C-suite and senior leadership stakeholders, paired with a solid sense of humor and genuine relationship-building skills.
  • Strong ability to exercise independent judgement on sensitive, high-stakes matters, guided by a strong moral compass and high integrity.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, and consistently deliver high-quality work product in a demanding, regulated, and rapidly evolving corporate environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of UK, Dutch, or Israeli employment law is a plus; willingness to learn is equally valued.
  • Experience with equity compensation and employee benefit plans, including Canadian and US stock option laws and equity grant structures for private companies, is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior trusted legal advisor to HR and senior leadership on employment relations and related matters in Canada and the US, providing strategic counsel that enables the business to move decisively while managing risk and minimizing liability exposure.
  • Lead the review, drafting, updating and/or negotiation of employment contracts and settlement agreements to uphold legal compliance, mitigate risk, and align with company standards.
  • Lead the development and implementation of enterprise-wide employment policies, regional employee handbooks, and procedures to foster a safe, inclusive, and legally compliant work environment.
  • Independently manage employment-related litigation, mediation, arbitration, and agency proceedings, including investigating and responding to demands from private attorneys on behalf of current and former employees, and overseeing and directing outside counsel where appropriate.
  • Own and ensure compliance with all employment laws and regulations with a particular focus on the evolving regulatory landscape in Canada and the US, including proactively monitoring and advising on legislative developments.
  • Provide strategic legal leadership in building and scaling the employment framework for international expansion, navigating the complexities of multi-jurisdictional global employment laws.
  • Develop and deliver training and education regarding employment-related laws and regulations for HR, managers, and employees.
  • Provide strategic legal advice on corporate governance matters, ensuring adherence to applicable laws and regulations.
  • Champion a culture of legal awareness and proactive risk management within the organization, embedding sound legal judgment into business decision-making at all levels.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior members of the legal team, contributing to team development and departmental knowledge-sharing.
  • Perform related duties as required.
