About The Position

This role oversees the overall technical solution for HVDC Control and Protection systems, ensuring customer requirements are met. The engineer will lead requirements gathering, system design, implementation, and development. Key responsibilities include reviewing technical documents, serving as the primary customer interface for technical discussions, defining control philosophies and protection logics, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The position also involves conducting advanced simulation studies (EMT, network modeling) and leading root cause analysis for complex issues. Mentorship of junior engineers and process improvement are also integral parts of the role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) control and protection system design.
  • Work experience to include: HVDC Control, Protection, and Sequencing strategies.
  • Work experience to include: Dynamic performance studies and system modelling for VSC-HVDC schemes.
  • Work experience to include: PSCAD, RSCAD, MATLAB and Simulink.
  • Work experience to include: Translating and communicating customer requirements to drive reference solutions, process improvements, and consistent technical quality across multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Work experience to include: Real-time simulation environments for Hardware-in-the-Loop using OPAL-RT or RTDS.
  • Work experience to include: System testing including: Integration System Test (IST), Functional System Test (FST), Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
  • Work experience to include: Control system studies and testing, including: Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), Dynamic performance studies, Protection coordination, and Overall system integration.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the overall technical solution, ensuring customer requirements are met based on reference solutions.
  • Lead requirements gathering, system design, implementation, and development of HVDC Control and Protection systems.
  • Review and approve technical documents, including control and protection settings, manuals, test plans, and test procedures.
  • Serve as the primary customer interface for technical discussions, training, and requirements clarification.
  • Define control philosophies, protection and interlocking logics, and data exchange configurations.
  • Lead and participate in engineering design processes, including design reviews and approval cycles.
  • Ensure that all design outputs comply with industry standards, system requirements, and quality procedures.
  • Conduct Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) studies using PSCAD, EMTP-RV, and model control/protection functions in MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Perform network conversion, modelling, tuning, and verification using PSSE, PSCAD, and RSCAD.
  • Develop full plant and system models and lead end-to-end validation across multiple simulation platforms.
  • Lead root cause analysis and troubleshooting of complex VSC control and protection issues.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and knowledge transfer to junior engineers.
  • Support managers in building high-performing, resilient teams.
  • Recruit, develop, and mentor engineering talent to enhance organizational capability.
  • Identify and implement improvements in engineering tools, processes, systems, and technical solutions to enhance customer value and operational efficiency.
  • Make informed decisions regarding work processes, schedules, priorities, and operational plans to achieve departmental objectives.
  • Uphold and promote SQDC principles across teams.
