About The Position

This is a fantastic fixed-term opportunity for an experienced Senior Consultant, Environmental Monitor based in Smithers, Calgary, Vancouver, or Whitehorse to advance their career with ERM, a global leader in environmental and sustainability consulting. You will work on complex, multimillion-dollar projects across Canada, including travel to stunning remote locations, and collaborate with a growing, high-performing team of fisheries and environmental specialists delivering work nationally and globally. Environmental performance during construction is critical to project success, regulatory confidence, and ecosystem protection. As a Senior Consultant, Environmental Monitor, you will play a key role in ensuring construction activities meet environmental requirements while protecting sensitive aquatic and terrestrial environments. Your expertise will help clients in the mining and energy sectors deliver projects responsibly across every phase of the project lifecycle. Your impact will include safeguarding fish, wildlife, and sensitive habitats during active construction, ensuring compliance with federal, provincial, and territorial environmental regulations, enabling responsible delivery of complex, multimillion-dollar projects across Canada, influencing environmental best practices through on-site leadership and collaboration, and representing ERM’s values and technical excellence in the field and with clients and regulators.

Requirements

  • Diploma or degree in environmental science, biology, natural resources, or a related discipline.
  • Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) or equivalent professional designation.
  • 3+ years of experience conducting environmental monitoring on construction projects.
  • Electrofishing certification and demonstrated experience leading fish salvage operations.
  • Strong commitment to health and safety and adherence to established procedures.
  • Experience working around heavy machinery and active construction sites.
  • Knowledge of federal, provincial, and territorial environmental regulations related to construction.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with proven problem-solving and teamwork ability.
  • Intermediate First Aid and Transportation Endorsement (or ability to obtain).
  • Willingness and ability to travel to remote locations, work in camps, follow site orientation and safety requirements, and participate in drug and alcohol testing.
  • This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular on-site environmental monitoring throughout all phases of construction to ensure compliance with environmental permits, regulatory requirements, and environmental protection plans.
  • Document site conditions, contractor compliance, and environmental issues using detailed field notes, photographs, and daily monitoring reports.
  • Communicate environmental concerns promptly and support the development and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Lead fish salvage operations in accordance with provincial and federal regulations.
  • Apply fish capture techniques including minnow trapping, electrofishing, and seining to safely relocate aquatic species.
  • Maintain accurate records of fish handling, relocation, species identification, and environmental conditions.
  • Ensure animal welfare standards and safety procedures are followed at all times.
  • Assess, install, and maintain erosion and sediment control (ESC) measures such as silt fences, turbidity curtains, diversion channels, and sediment traps.
  • Monitor water quality parameters (e.g., turbidity, pH) and verify compliance with regulatory thresholds.
  • Prepare daily or weekly environmental monitoring reports, including observations, data collection, and recommended actions.
  • Liaise with contractors, engineers, environmental specialists, and regulatory agencies as required.
  • Participate in environmental toolbox meetings and provide guidance to construction personnel on environmental best management practices.
