About The Position

Turner & Townsend Heery is seeking a Senior Construction Bridge Engineer to provide senior-level engineering leadership, technical oversight, and construction support for complex bridge, guideway, and structural infrastructure associated with major transportation and railroad programs, including the California High-Speed Rail Project. The role leads the review and resolution of complex structural engineering issues, evaluates bridge design and construction documents, provides technical direction to project teams, and helps ensure construction complies with contract requirements, applicable design standards, and regulatory requirements. It serves as a senior technical resource and liaison among design consultants, construction management, contractors, engineers, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders to support safe and successful delivery of bridge infrastructure. The position provides oversight across design, construction, inspection, testing, and acceptance of transportation structures. It involves reviewing design and construction documentation, performing or overseeing structural analyses, evaluating field conditions and proposed changes, and providing technical guidance on construction methods and temporary works. The engineer also supports quality management, claims and change evaluations, risk management, regulatory coordination, and staff development. The role requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related discipline and at least 15 years of progressively responsible relevant experience, or 18 years of such experience in lieu of a degree. A current California Civil PE license is required, or the ability to obtain California registration through reciprocity within six months of hire. The posted full-time base salary range is $160,000–$200,000 per year.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline and at least 15 years of progressively responsible bridge, structural, transportation, or construction engineering experience; alternatively, 18 years of progressively responsible bridge or structural engineering experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Current California Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil Engineering, or ability to obtain California registration through reciprocity within six months of hire.
  • Demonstrated experience with design, construction, inspection, or technical oversight of bridges or other complex transportation structures.
  • Advanced knowledge of reinforced concrete, prestressed and post-tensioned concrete, structural steel, foundation systems, seismic design principles, structural analysis, and bridge construction methods.
  • Strong ability to interpret engineering plans, specifications, structural calculations, contract documents, construction drawings, and technical reports.
  • Ability to independently analyze complex engineering problems, develop technically sound solutions, and exercise professional engineering judgment.
  • Experience reviewing contractor submittals, RFIs, design changes, construction work plans, temporary works, and other technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of construction quality assurance, inspection, testing, non-conformance resolution, and construction documentation processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparing and presenting technical recommendations to project management, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary technical coordination and work effectively with engineers, construction personnel, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and engineering, structural analysis, design, and construction management software.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple technical assignments, and make sound engineering recommendations in a complex construction environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting California High-Speed Rail, Caltrans, major commuter rail, freight rail, or other large-scale public infrastructure programs.
  • Advanced knowledge of AREMA, AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, Caltrans Bridge Design and Construction Manuals, the California Building Code, and other applicable standards.
  • Experience with seismic design and evaluation of bridges and transportation structures under applicable California and national standards.
  • Experience reviewing and overseeing falsework, shoring, erection engineering, temporary works, construction staging, lifting operations, and complex construction sequencing.
  • Experience with finite element analysis and structural engineering software such as SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, MIDAS Civil, LUSAS, CSiBridge, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with BIM, 3D structural coordination, and digital engineering workflows.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety certification or equivalent construction safety training.
  • Experience with construction management and document control platforms such as Primavera Unifier, Procore, Bluebeam Revu, ProjectWise, or similar systems.
  • Experience leading technical teams, mentoring engineers, and coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities on complex infrastructure projects.
