As Senior Communications Lead for the United States, you will own the full communications remit for one of Back Market's highest-priority markets, spanning corporate reputation, consumer storytelling, and earned-influencer strategy. This is an integrated comms role that requires cross-functional collaboration and flexible/ regular travel. You will manage a local PR agency and lead the planning and implementation of Earned US strategies, operating across corporate narratives (executive and regulatory positioning, business & finance media, category leadership), consumer (product moments, cultural relevance, brand trust), and earned influencer engagement (talent relations, activation development, community building). You will build and maintain direct trust-based relationships, with journalists and influential voices across national, business, tech, consumer, sustainability, culture and trade outlets. Track, analyse, and report on media coverage, and integrated earned communications performance - translating data into actionable insight. Your work will directly influence executive decision-making, shape how Back Market is perceived in the US market, and help establish refurbished tech as an easy, confident choice for every American household. You will serve as the primary media-facing representative for the business, and a trusted communications counsel to the US Country Manager and Head of Marketing.

Requirements

  • Significant experience (typically 8-12 years) leading integrated communication programmes for US audiences - with a strong track record across corporate, consumer, and influencer disciplines.
  • Hands-on experience managing PR agencies and external partners, with the ability to hold them to high performance standards.
  • Experience leading or supporting crisis communications with accuracy, composure, and sound judgement.
  • Strong writing and editing skills across all PR formats: pitches, press releases, executive talking points, briefing documents, and long-form narrative content.
  • A strategic builder: utilising data and consumer insights to create and execute communications strategies that amplify the power of earned storytelling with measurable success that ladders back to the business
  • Demonstrated success developing earned influencer programmes that drive genuine advocacy - not just paid content dressed as organic.
  • Proven executive counsel experience - comfortable advising and challenging senior stakeholders, and trusted to represent the brand's interests in high-stakes situations.
  • Experience serving as a company spokesperson and the primary media-facing representative for a brand or executive team.
  • Track record translating complex or emerging categories into clear, compelling consumer narratives.
  • Direct, active relationships with reporters and editors who shape national conversations in technology, business, sustainability, and culture.
  • Comfortable in fast-moving, ambiguous environments - ideally with startup, scale-up, or agency experience where adaptability is essential.
  • Curiosity about sustainability, refurbished tech, or circular economy principles and the appetite to become an expert.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Global + US leadership to co-develop the annual/ quarterly comms strategy that builds Back Market's credibility and authority across business, technology, and sustainability media. Ensuring OKRs and communications activity maps to measurable business outcomes.
  • Serve as the primary communications advisor to the US Country Manager and Head of Marketing - bringing proactive counsel on narrative strategy, reputation risk, media positioning, and message development.
  • Brief and prepare senior executives ahead of media engagements and high-profile public appearances - coaching for clarity, consistency, and confidence.
  • Present quarterly to the executive committee on earned media performance, sentiment trends, competitive positioning, and ROI of narrative investments.
  • Partner closely with US Marketing teams on campaign activations, launches, and seasonal moments to ensure earned comms and paid / owned strategies are fully integrated.
  • Own the corporate narrative: company milestones, funding moments, market expansion, policy engagements, and category-defining data stories.
  • Drive thought leadership programs that position Back Market - and its senior leaders as definitive voices in the circular economy, responsible consumption, and the future of consumer tech.
  • Lead US crisis communications planning and response, coordinating with global comms to ensure aligned, accurate, and timely messaging.
  • Lead consumer communications that drive product awareness, brand trust, and category adoption -particularly among audiences new to refurbished tech.
  • Identify and activate culturally relevant storytelling opportunities that connect Back Market's mission to the moments, movements, and conversations Americans care about.
  • Co-develop and manage earned influencer strategy with US marketing lead
  • Partner with social and brand teams to ensure influencer content ladder up to broader marketing and earned media goals.
  • Identify and partner with content creators, online communities, and cultural figures whose audiences align with Back Market's values and growth priorities.
  • Nurture and build an ambassador community of 5-15 active influential voices that advocate Back Market, leveraging them for consumer or cultural impact opportunities - establish clear performance metrics.
  • Design and manage product seeding and gifting programs that generate organic earned conversations and build confidence in the Back Market experience.
  • Partner with Brand Activism, Sustainability and Brand Partnerships team to identify and activate mission-aligned partners, local leaders, and organisations in key US regions who can amplify Back Market's values-led story.
  • Ensure community voices, policy stakeholders, and purpose-driven organisations are integrated into Back Market events and brand programmes.
  • Provide strategic input on activations, sponsorships, and events to maximise reputational impact and narrative coherence.
