About The Position

The Senior Commercial Underwriter is responsible for contributing to high quality loan growth by analyzing, underwriting, recommending and approving credit requests generated by Calling Officers. The quality, completeness, and accuracy of a credit approval is of utmost importance to ensure sound lending decisions. The role will also assist with monitoring and managing existing loan portfolio to minimize credit losses and maintain compliance with loan policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in finance or closely related field and 7 year's experience in commercial, commercial real estate, and construction lending underwriting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of commercial underwriting, lending policies, procedures, practices and documentation including accounting, financial statement and cash flow analysis, and financial projection modeling.
  • Thorough knowledge of underwriting policies and procedures for Commercial Real Estate including appraisal methods, and environmental due diligence practices.
  • Knowledge of bank regulations, income tax accounting, finance and economics.
  • Knowledge of underwriting policies, procedures, and eligibility requirements for SBA loans.
  • Skills operating a personal computer with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software.
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented with strong qualitative and analytical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, structure, and underwrite loan requests and renewals, including commercial loans/lines, commercial real estate and other commercial loan products.
  • Utilize financial statements, credit reports, industry data, appraisals and legal documentation to develop a comprehensive financial and risk assessment for prospective and existing customers.
  • Independently underwrite and structure large and complex Commercial, SBA, and Real Estate loans which may often include presentations to loan committee.
  • Analyze transactions often characterized by complex capital structures and income streams with complicated pro-forma cash projections.
  • Work closely with credit officers and account officers to negotiate loan terms and accompany account officers on customer calls when necessary.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert or resource for less experienced underwriters and account officers. Assists with training of new or less experienced underwriters and analysts.
  • May be assigned a portfolio of problem loan customers, and/or large and complex customer relationships.
  • Interact with credit officers, loan officers, branch staff, appraisal staff, legal staff, customers and other related Bank personnel regarding issues of credit quality, loan structure, pricing, risk grading and loan documentation.
  • Recommend or approve loans within delegated lending authority.
  • Provide guidance and consultation on lending policies, procedures, pricing and structuring.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, as well as bank policies and procedures.
  • Work with Loan Service Center to order loan documentation and coordinate delivery of all required forms and information.
  • Participate as a proactive member of the Credit Administration team, which may involve assisting with loan portfolio monitoring, including annual reviews, loan covenant compliance, problem loan monitoring, and the development and execution of loan collection strategies; collaborate with Calling Officers on loan workout plan and preparation of quarterly watch reports.
  • Identify sales opportunities during the underwriting process and make recommendations as needed for follow-up.
  • Follow-up with loan officers and/or customers to ensure satisfaction and cross-sell additional products.
  • Work with other departments to successfully complete the sales cycle.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
