Senior Coding Specialist (Psychiatry/Dermatology Coding Exp) - REMOTE
About The Position
The Senior Coding Specialist reviews, accurately assigns, and abstracts professional and outpatient facility diagnostic and procedural codes for encounters using designated coding classifications, working independently. The role develops workflows to organize and prioritize complex coding work, supporting compliance with regulatory requirements and hospital targets. It uses coding systems and guidelines to select accurate codes while considering resources used during patient encounters. The specialist identifies documentation gaps or inconsistencies that may affect code assignment and initiates queries or tasks to clarify documentation. The role also provides guidance and support to coding staff on complex coding scenarios and regulatory requirements, helps support staff training and development, and stays current with coding regulations and guidelines. Additional duties may be assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Four years of experience.
- Relevant work experience.
- Advanced knowledge of medical professional and outpatient facility coding.
- Advanced ability to understand medical terminology and documentation in an office or surgical setting.
- Advanced critical-thinking skills.
- Advanced understanding of compliance rules, regulations, sanctions, statutory requirements, guidelines, and instructions.
- One or more listed coding or health information credentials: Certified Coding Associate (AHIMA), Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA), Certified Coding Specialist–Physician (AHIMA), Certified Outpatient Coder (AAPC), Certified Professional Coder–Outpatient (AAPC), RHIA (AHIMA), or RHIT (AHIMA).
