Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

CHAOS Industries•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

CHAOS Industries is hiring a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to join a small, collaborative team in San Francisco and build the cloud platform behind advanced radar systems. The role involves designing, building, and operating infrastructure and backend services that move mission-critical sensor data from field radars to operators. The platform is already in production and growing, and the engineer will scale it as the sensor fleet, customer base, and deployments expand. The engineer will design and operate Azure infrastructure as code using Terraform, including networking, Azure Container Apps, managed databases, and CI/CD pipelines. They will build and own high-throughput Python (FastAPI) backend services and data systems for ingesting and streaming real-time sensor data, using technologies such as PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB, Redis, and Cosmos DB. They will collaborate across engineering teams on the platform’s future architecture and own security, reliability, and observability, including access controls, secrets management, network isolation, Datadog monitoring and alerting, and incident response.

Requirements

  • Experience building and operating production infrastructure in at least one major cloud (Azure, AWS, or GCP), defined as code with Terraform, Pulumi, Bicep, or CloudFormation.
  • Experience running containerized production workloads with Docker on a managed platform such as Azure Container Apps, AWS ECS or Fargate, Google Cloud Run, or Kubernetes.
  • Strong cloud networking fundamentals, including virtual networks, subnets, routing, DNS, load balancers, private endpoints, and firewalls.
  • Experience building and operating production backend services in Python, Go, or a similar language, with understanding of concurrency, async I/O, connection pooling, and resource limits under load.
  • Fluency in distributed systems, including consistency and replication, partitioning, caching, back-pressure, idempotency, failure modes, and graceful degradation.
  • Experience scaling a production system well beyond its original design and addressing the problems that arose.
  • Ability to build securely by default, including least-privilege access, keeping secrets out of code, and maintaining patched, hardened systems, while explaining the trade-offs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Azure Government, AWS GovCloud, or other regulated environments, including FedRAMP, CMMC, NIST 800-171, or NIST 800-53.
  • Experience with real-time and streaming data systems, including WebSockets, server-sent events, pub/sub, and message queues.
  • Experience with identity and cloud security, including Entra ID, OAuth 2.0/OIDC, managed identities, service-to-service authentication, and policy as code.

Responsibilities

  • Design and operate Azure infrastructure as code using Terraform, including networking, Azure Container Apps, managed databases, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Build and own high-throughput backend services in Python (FastAPI) and the data layer used to ingest and stream real-time sensor data.
  • Work with engineering teams across the company to define the architecture of the next generation of the platform.
  • Own platform security, reliability, and observability, including identity and access, secrets management, network isolation, monitoring and alerting with Datadog, and incident response.
  • Scale the production platform as the sensor fleet, customer base, and deployments grow.
