Senior Cloud Engineer

Fervo Energy•Houston, TX
•Hybrid

About The Position

The Senior Cloud Engineer builds, automates, and operates Fervo Energy’s Azure-native cloud platform, translating architectural designs into repeatable, well-governed infrastructure. The role focuses on infrastructure as code, GitHub-based delivery, self-service platform capabilities, and automated configuration of Linux and Windows systems. It requires hands-on engineering, demonstrated coding ability, and managing infrastructure through version-controlled, peer-reviewed practices rather than manual changes. The position is based at Fervo Energy’s Houston office and allows some hybrid flexibility. Employees in this role are expected to work in the office three days per week; regular in-office presence is an essential function of the role. Fervo Energy develops next-generation geothermal resources to provide affordable, reliable, around-the-clock carbon-free energy. Its approach combines horizontal drilling, fiber-optic sensing, and advanced reservoir engineering. Its flagship Cape Station development in Utah is planned to deliver 500 MW, and the company is advancing a development pipeline of more than 50 GW.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8 years of infrastructure support or engineering experience, with demonstrated progression.
  • At least 6 years of experience in cloud engineering, infrastructure automation, or platform engineering.
  • Production experience with infrastructure as code using Terraform and/or Bicep, including reusable modules and state management.
  • Hands-on experience with Git/GitHub and GitHub Actions for CI/CD, or a similar product.
  • Demonstrated coding ability in Python and/or PowerShell, evidenced by repositories or work samples.
  • Experience managing both Linux and Windows systems through automation, such as Ansible and Microsoft Intune and/or Group Policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Platform engineering experience, including internal developer platforms, golden paths, and self-service provisioning.
  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) experience; Azure remains the primary platform.
  • SUSE Manager or an equivalent such as Red Hat Satellite, and Microsoft Intune at scale.
  • Policy-as-code experience, such as Azure Policy or Open Policy Agent, and secrets management experience with Azure Key Vault or HashiCorp Vault.
  • Regulated-sector experience and familiarity with NIST CSF, ISO 27001, or NERC CIP.
  • Certifications such as Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104), Azure DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400), or HashiCorp Terraform Associate.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain infrastructure as code using Terraform and/or Bicep, including reusable modules, to provision Azure resources consistently across environments and sites.
  • Build CI/CD pipelines in GitHub Actions and enforce GitOps workflows using version control, pull requests, and peer review.
  • Develop and improve golden paths and self-service capabilities, with policy guardrails for security, cost, and tagging standards.
  • Document platform capabilities so internal teams can use them without one-to-one engineering support.
  • Automate Linux configuration using Ansible and SUSE Manager or an equivalent, and Windows configuration using Microsoft Intune and/or Group Policy, avoiding manual host-by-host changes.
  • Maintain baseline images and standards so new hosts, including field and edge compute, are provisioned in a known, compliant state.
  • Operate Azure landing zones and platform services within an Entra ID and Zero Trust model, with monitoring, logging, alerting, and cost observability.
  • Ensure changes flow through auditable pipelines that support SOX ITGC, and apply NERC CIP-aligned controls where platform components support in-scope systems.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision plan options.
  • Employer-paid basic life insurance and short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • 401(k) plan with up to 6% match.
  • Flexible paid time off and paid parental leave.
  • Family-building, fertility, hormonal health, pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting support through Carrot.
  • Dependent care FSA for eligible child and elder care expenses.
  • Annual Lifestyle Spending Account for eligible wellness expenses, including fitness, financial planning, pet insurance, and pet care.
  • Employee ownership opportunities through the Employee Stock Purchase Program, stock option grants, and bonus opportunities for eligible roles.
