Senior Cloud Engineer (Azure)
About The Position
Ampcus Inc. is seeking a highly motivated Senior Cloud Engineer with expertise in Microsoft Azure to join their talented team. This remote, contract position focuses on designing, implementing, and administering the Azure infrastructure for an enterprise data and AI platform. The role centers on key Azure services including Azure Databricks, ADLS Gen2, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Machine Learning. The engineer will be responsible for the platform's foundation, including infrastructure as code, network and identity architecture, compute governance, observability, and cost management, while collaborating closely with Databricks administration, data engineering, and data science teams.
Requirements
- 6 years in cloud infrastructure or platform engineering, with at least 4 years focused on Microsoft Azure.
- Expert-level, hands-on experience with Terraform.
- Demonstrable hands-on Databricks administration experience.
- A track record as a senior technical resource to adjacent teams.
- Deep working knowledge of Azure networking and security components.
- ADLS Gen2 design and access control experience.
- Platform-side experience with Azure Data Factory, including integration runtimes and deployment automation.
- Strong Python skills, plus PowerShell and/or Bash for automation and scripting.
- Working knowledge of Spark & SQL to diagnose infrastructure and configuration-level performance issues.
Nice To Haves
- Databricks Asset Bundles, the Terraform Databricks provider, and workspace-as-code patterns.
- Experience leading a Unity Catalog migration or multi-workspace consolidation.
- Azure Machine Learning, MLflow, or model-serving infrastructure experience.
- Kubernetes / AKS and containerized workloads.
- Policy as code — Azure Policy, OPA, Sentinel, or Checkov.
- Event-driven infrastructure — Event Hubs, Kafka, or Stream Analytics.
- Formal FinOps practice experience.
- Multi-region or multi-tenant Databricks deployments.
- Databricks Certified Data Engineer Professional, or a Databricks platform administrator credential.
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305).
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104).
- Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400).
- HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and administer the Azure foundation the platform runs on.
- Author and maintain reusable Terraform modules for Infrastructure as Code.
- Design and implement private networking and security posture.
- Own ADLS Gen2 at the infrastructure layer.
- Own ADF from the platform side.
- Provision and operate infrastructure supporting machine learning workloads.
- Build and maintain the monitoring layer for observability and reliability.
- Own cost visibility and optimization (FinOps & Capacity Planning).
- Own deployment pipelines and promotion paths (CI/CD & Environment Management).
- Support Databricks account and workspace administration, including console configuration and workspace provisioning.
- Manage Unity Catalog metastore design and regional strategy.
- Handle Entra ID integration and identity federation for Databricks.
- Implement cluster policies and instance pools for compute governance.
- Analyze Databricks cost and usage through system tables and usage attribution.
- Review platform configurations and support administration and data teams.
- Investigate and determine root causes of issues across boundaries.
