About The Position

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is seeking a Senior Clerk Typist for Balboa High School. This role serves as the welcoming first point of contact for students and families navigating enrollment, registration, and academic questions, ensuring a smooth and supported transition. Requirements

  • Two (2) years of verifiable clerical experience including at least one year at a level comparable to a 1424 Clerk Typist.
  • Experience must have included data entry, preparing and maintaining a wide variety of documents and reports, public contact, checking and reviewing documents for completeness, and performing mathematical computations.
  • A warm, approachable, and patient disposition — being comfortable as the "first face" families see when they are anxious, confused, or navigating a new system.
  • Strong active listening skills and the ability to de-escalate concerns from students or families about academic standing or progress.
  • Knowledge of San Francisco's public schools/urban public schools and a passionate belief in SFUSD's commitment to instructional leadership.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail, particularly with student records and documentation.
  • The ability to identify challenges and proactively find solutions, while maintaining a bigger-picture lens and focus on what can be delivered.
  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt in a fast-paced, front-facing environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain enrollment and academic processes to a variety of audiences.

  • Cultural competency and sensitivity when working with diverse student and family populations.
  • Strong computer skills including student information systems, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and GSuite (Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms).

Nice To Haves

  • A recognized clerical training program of 240 hours or the equivalent of 15 semester units in graded clerical college units may substitute for up to 6 months of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Process new student registrations, transfers, and re-enrollments, ensuring all required documentation is collected, verified, and accurately entered into the student information system.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for incoming families, guiding them through enrollment steps, school policies, and academic program options.
  • Respond to students and families with questions or concerns about academic standing, schedules, credits, or progress, directing them to the appropriate next step or staff member.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the front office and the academic counseling team, relaying student needs, scheduling concerns, and follow-up items.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and confidential student records in compliance with district and state requirements (e.g., FERPA).
  • Coordinate with academic counselors to track incoming students' course placement, transcript evaluation, and any gaps in academic history.
  • Communicate registration timelines, required documents, and deadlines clearly to families.
  • Support daily front-office operations, including phone and in-person inquiries, filing, data entry, and coordination with school administration.
  • Escalate sensitive or complex academic/family situations to the counseling team or administration promptly and appropriately.
  • Coordinate and communicate with case managers and representatives from outside agencies to support student enrollment, records requests, and continuity of care, while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a broader team of clerks and family liaisons.
