About The Position

SSFM is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineer with strong technical design expertise and the leadership presence to represent SSFM in Charrettes and high-visibility project settings. This role spans all civil design project types, supporting multidisciplinary teams and driving high-quality, culturally aligned engineering solutions for Hawai‘i’s communities. The Senior Civil Engineer will serve as a technical lead across a variety of civil design projects, guiding concept development, engineering analysis, and design refinement. • Hawai‘i Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to obtain within an approved timeframe.
  • 8–10+ years of civil engineering design experience across site, roadway, utility, or infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical design teams on complex, multi‑disciplinary projects.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and presentation skills suitable for client‑facing collaboration and Charrette participation.
  • Proficiency with design platforms such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, or equivalent.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience participating in or leading Charrettes or collaborative design workshops.
  • Familiarity with Hawai‘i agency processes, permitting requirements, and infrastructure programs.
  • Experience coordinating with architects, planners, and environmental specialists.
  • Strong understanding of QA/QC processes and engineering documentation standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead civil engineering design efforts for projects across SSFM’s portfolio, ensuring technical excellence and adherence to QA/QC standards.
  • Serve as SSFM’s engineering representative during Charrettes—communicating design intent, evaluating concepts rapidly, and guiding interdisciplinary alignment.
  • Perform and oversee engineering analyses, feasibility studies, and preliminary calculations that inform both Charrette discussions and project documentation.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and collaborate closely with planners, architects, and project managers.
  • Ensure project deliverables meet applicable codes, agency requirements, and Hawai‘i-specific permitting standards.
  • Contribute to project scoping, scheduling, design coordination, and client communications.
  • Champion collaborative, culturally sensitive, and sustainability-focused design approaches.
