About The Position

The City of Ventura is seeking a Civil Engineer with project management experience to join our Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Design Team within the Public Works Department. This role is ideal for a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) ready to step into a leadership-focused role managing and delivering municipal infrastructure projects. Reporting to the Principal Civil Engineer, you will lead a small team and manage projects through all phases, including planning, environmental review, design coordination, bidding, and construction support. Requirements

  • A combination of training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field and four years of professional Civil Engineering experience, including some experience in a lead or project management capacity.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license
  • Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in the State of California is required at the time of appointment

Responsibilities

  • Project Management: Plan, manage, and deliver Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects from concept through construction
  • Design Oversight & QA/QC: Review engineering plans, specifications, and technical documents to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance throughout all project phases
  • Consultant Coordination: Procure and manage consultants; coordinate with regulatory and permitting agencies
  • Staff Supervision: Provide guidance, training, and oversight to assigned engineering staff
  • Stakeholder Communication: Collaborate with internal departments, external partners, and present to public forums including City Council
  • Technical Documentation: Prepare and review reports, plans, specifications, cost estimates, schedules, and project documentation
