About The Position

The Senior CICS & IBM MQ Engineer is responsible for the architecture, engineering, reliability, and operational support of mission-critical mainframe transaction processing and messaging platforms. This role provides deep technical leadership for IBM CICS and IBM MQ environments, ensuring high availability, performance, security, and seamless integration with distributed systems. The engineer partners closely with application, infrastructure, security, and operations teams to support business-critical workloads and to drive modernization, resiliency, and automation initiatives. Key responsibilities include managing storage pools, administering IBM DS8K storage systems, supporting virtual tape operations, working with hierarchical storage management, utilizing backup and recovery tools, supporting IBM GDPS environments for replication and high availability, participating in Disaster Recovery, and maintaining mainframe storage assets. The role also involves installing, upgrading, and maintaining IBM and third-party mainframe storage-related products, performing SMPE installation, and utilizing various IBM utilities and mainframe scripting languages.

Requirements

  • Deep knowledge of DFHSM, DFSMS, FDR, MVSRM, and related storage utilities.
  • Experience managing mainframe storage pools and volume lifecycle operations.
  • Strong understanding of mainframe storage concepts, catalogs, and alias structures.
  • MVS System commands, catalog management.
  • Strong skills with: JCL, TSO, Rexx & CLIST scripting.
  • Experience with SMPE for installation and maintenance.
  • Experience with UNIX System Services (file systems, mounts).
  • Experience with multi-site and multi-sysplex environments.
  • Familiarity with IBM GDPS and replication technologies.
  • IBM DS8K storage experience required.
  • Experience with DB2/IMS utilities.
  • Knowledge of system initialization, tuning, and performance optimization.
  • Ability to participate in on-call rotation as needed.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, information technology, or related area and 3 years’experience in technology infrastructure engineering across areas such as compute, storage, network, mobility or virtualization-related technologies OR 5 years’ experience in technology infrastructure engineering across areas such as compute, storage, network, mobility or virtualization related technologies.

  • Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, information technology, or related area.
  • 1 Year of relevant experience in configuration management, developing automation for Provisioning and Orchestration, experience developing and managing service-level objectives (SLOs)/service level indicators (SLIs) for Infrastructure Service availability and performance.
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practices and joining Walmart in creating accessible products and services following Walmart’s accessibility standards and guidelines for supporting an inclusive culture.

Responsibilities

  • Manage storage pools, including adding volumes, cleanup, and reclaiming unused volumes.
  • Provide expert support for space allocation recommendations and usage optimization.
  • Administer and maintain IBM DS8K storage systems.
  • Support multiple large-scale parallel sysplex environments with data sharing.
  • Perform system initialization, performance tuning, and subsystem optimization.
  • Support virtual tape operations, ideally with experience in Luminex virtual tape systems (preferred but not required).
  • Work with DFHSM for hierarchical storage management.
  • Utilize tools including FDR and MVSRM for backup, recovery, and storage resource management.
  • Support IBM GDPS environments, including Metro Mirror, Global Mirror, Metro-Global Mirror, Hyperswap.
  • Participate in Disaster Recovery planning, testing, and execution.
  • Maintain DR readiness across mainframe storage assets.
  • Install, upgrade, and maintain IBM and third-party mainframe storage-related products.
  • Perform SMPE installation and maintenance of program products.
  • Use IBM utilities including DB2 and IMS utilities.
  • Utilize JCL, TSO, and mainframe scripting (Rexx, CLIST).
