About The Position

The Marathon Carson Refinery in Carson, California is seeking an experienced Senior Chemical Process Design Engineer (POG) for Process Optimization and Growth. This role contributes to long-term strategy development and identifies opportunities to increase throughput, improve yields, enhance reliability, and optimize energy use in process units. The position involves developing process designs for new projects and unit modifications, including PFDs, P&IDs, and heat/material balances. The available onsite schedules are 9/80, 5/40, or 4/1, with infrequent after-hours calls and occasional support for TAR project implementation. Core hours are 8 AM - 3 PM.

Requirements

  • Must have a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • Must have at least 3 years of chemical process design engineering AND 4 years of operations support experience in a refinery and petro-chemical industry.
  • Candidate must have a total of 7 years of experience.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft 365: Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator).
  • Must be able to physically perform all tasks in the field.
  • Must take hair drug test and physical.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledgeable in FCC, Hydrotreating and Hydrocracking, Reforming unit technologies is preferred.
  • Previous refinery operations support engineering and process designed experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to refinery/organizational long-term strategy development and identifies opportunities to increase throughput, improve yields, increase reliability and optimize energy use in process units.
  • Develops process designs for new projects and unit modifications, including PFDs, P&IDs, and heat/material balances.
  • Performs process simulations and calculations to support equipment sizing, hydraulic analysis, and energy optimization.
  • Leads economic analysis and establishes project rate of return.
  • Collaborates with project engineers, operations, and external vendors to ensure alignment of design with operational needs.
  • Prepares process design packages and supports HAZOPs, LOPA studies, and other safety reviews.
  • Provides technical leadership during project execution, including design reviews, construction support, and commissioning.
  • Stays current with industry standards and best practices to ensure high-quality, cost-effective designs.
  • Serves as a mentor for less experienced engineers.
