About The Position

The 61st Street Service Corporation, a provider of administrative and clinical support staff for ColumbiaDoctors, is seeking a Senior Certified Medical Assistant (SCMA). This role supports ColumbiaDoctors, one of the largest multi-specialty practices in the Northeast, comprising over 2,800 physicians, surgeons, dentists, and nurses across more than 240 specialties. The SCMA is an experienced Medical Assistant adept at handling complex cases and exercising independent judgment. Beyond clinical and administrative duties, the SCMA will contribute to quality improvement initiatives to ensure high-quality patient care, working with minimal supervision. As a vital member of the patient care team, the SCMA will collaborate with providers across various specialties and other clinical/administrative staff to deliver an exceptional patient experience, aiming for positive health outcomes and fostering a work culture aligned with values of Service-Oriented, Trust, Empathy, Safety, Inclusion, and Communication. This position requires working Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at the main medical center (161 Fort Washington Avenue) and Wednesdays at the Chinatown practice (128 Mott Street).

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalency.
  • Graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • CMA must be certified by a credentialing body.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in a medical assistant role.
  • Current BCLS/AED certification required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and/or understanding of EMR systems.
  • Prior experience in front desk support and/or workflows.
  • Strong aptitude for detail, flexibility, adaptation to change, and ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with OSHA standards, including disposal of biohazard waste.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform across multi-disciplinary and/or specialty areas while maintaining high productivity and a professional and service-oriented demeanor.
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and respectful manner.
  • Strong commitment to fostering diversity and equity.
  • Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and a strong ability to deescalate stressful situations.

  • Will provide coverage as requested throughout practices (multiple sites and flexible schedule).

Nice To Haves

  • OBGYN experience is highly preferred.
  • Associate degree or additional academic coursework preferred.
  • Multi-specialty experience in a high-volume outpatient setting preferred.
  • Prior Epic experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and interact with patients, visitors, vendors, and all faculty and staff.
  • Prepare patients for their visit, including pre-visit organization of information, escorting patients, taking vital signs, medication reconciliation, documenting chief complaint, updating history, and updating EMR (Epic).
  • Assist patients with walking, dressing, collecting and processing specimens, point-of-care testing, and preparing for exams.
  • Serve as a chaperone in the exam room as requested.
  • Assist physicians with examinations, procedures, and department-specific therapies that do not require medical judgment.
  • Perform phlebotomy duties and point-of-care tests (e.g., urinalysis, pregnancy tests).
  • Prepare and label specimens, ensuring timely delivery to the appropriate designation.
  • Ensure proper labs are drawn and documented via Epic, and assist in troubleshooting missing labs.
  • Enter orders in Epic as required.
  • Notify physicians and nurses of emergencies and perform first aid.
  • Open sterile packages under direct supervision.
  • Assist in the sterilization and autoclaving process under supervision.
  • Ensure the treatment room is clean and safe, escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Manage and track patient flow from arrival to departure using an EMR system.
  • Serve as a liaison between physicians and other individuals, including patients.
  • Prepare and maintain medical charts.
  • Copy and mail requests for medical records, ensuring HIPAA compliance.
  • Perform check-out functions such as scheduling and referrals.
  • Participate in debriefing and quality improvement practices.
  • Bring safety and quality events, concerns, and needs to debriefs/safety huddles.
  • Collaborate with team members on quality-related projects.
  • Increase transparency, encourage event reporting, and advance the safety culture.
  • Share knowledge and offer guidance/mentorship to facilitate team collaboration.
  • Assist with daily staffing schedules and address coverage issues.
  • Assist with onboarding and training of new or less experienced CMAs.
  • Contribute ideas for improving practice workflows.
