Senior Calibration Engineer (Compute Test, Agoura Hills, CA)

Teradyne•Agoura Hills, CA
•$167,200 - $267,600

About The Position

Teradyne’s Hardware Engineering team is seeking a technically driven Senior Calibration Engineer for its Compute Test division. This hands-on player-coach role owns calibration architecture and development for one or more instrument areas while leading a small team of 3–4 calibration engineers. Supervisory responsibilities make up less than 50% of the role, with most time dedicated to technical work. Development takes place in a dynamic, multi-site environment. The position reports to the Calibration Software Engineering Manager. The engineer owns calibration architecture and strategy for assigned digital, DC, AC, and/or RF instruments in automated test equipment (ATE), from requirements through production release. The role includes developing calibration programs and embedded algorithms; defining hardware circuits and error budgets; validating calibration and hardware performance; integrating external measurement equipment; leading root-cause analysis and corrective actions; and improving calibration accuracy, test time, and repeatability. As team lead, the engineer provides technical direction to 3–4 calibration engineers, prioritizes work, reviews designs, code, and documentation, and mentors team members. The role also includes supporting performance and development planning, hiring and onboarding, representing the team in reviews and meetings, coordinating across sites and functions, and escalating risks to the Calibration Software Engineering Manager. Candidates must be local to the position location; relocation assistance is unavailable. The position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. The base salary range is $167,200–$267,600, with the actual salary dependent on experience, skills, demand, and location.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 8 years of experience developing calibration, measurement, test, or instrumentation systems, including hardware/software integration.
  • Strong programming skills in one or more of C, C++, C#, and Python for instrument control, data acquisition, and algorithm development.
  • Hands-on experience with precision measurement, calibration methods, error analysis, and statistical data analysis.
  • Experience with bench instrumentation such as DMMs, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and power meters, and with automating measurements.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, such as leading projects, mentoring engineers, or directing the work of others.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to influence across hardware, software, and test functions and multiple sites.
  • Must be local to the position location; relocation is not provided.
  • Not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in computer science and electrical engineering.
  • Experience with ATE or semiconductor test equipment.
  • Experience creating calibration strategy documents and hardware error budgets.
  • Prior experience supervising engineers or serving as a team lead.

Responsibilities

  • Own calibration architecture and strategy for assigned Digital, DC, AC, and/or RF instruments in ATE, from requirements through production release.
  • Develop and review calibration programs and embedded algorithms in C, C++, C#, and Python.
  • Author and approve calibration strategy documents defining the hardware circuits needed to meet instrument accuracy specifications.
  • Lead development of hardware error budgets and offline and online validation of error terms, using statistical analysis to assess specification and process compliance.
  • Define offline and online tests to validate instrument calibration and hardware performance, including simulation with Verilog and SPICE.
  • Lead root-cause analysis of calibration and hardware performance issues and drive corrective action with hardware, software, test, and manufacturing teams.
  • Integrate external measurement equipment, including DMMs, spectrum analyzers, and power meters, into calibration and validation programs.
  • Drive continuous improvement in calibration accuracy, test time, and repeatability.
  • Set technical direction for 3–4 calibration engineers; assign and prioritize work; review designs, code, and documentation.
  • Hold regular one-on-ones, set goals and development plans, and provide input to performance reviews.
  • Mentor and coach engineers toward independent ownership of calibration areas.
  • Participate in hiring and onboarding for the calibration team.
