About The Position

National Grid's Global Procurement function is seeking a Senior Buyer to develop and implement robust Category Strategies. This role involves engaging with stakeholders to identify business needs and understand supply chains to offer the best solutions for National Grid. The Senior Buyer will be part of the Global Direct Team, focusing on direct buying activities and contributing to the company's Net Zero targets. This is a global role requiring collaboration across National Grid locations in the US and UK, involving international travel. The position is ideal for candidates with procurement, commercial, or contract management experience. Two roles are available: one in the Brooklyn office and one in the Waltham office, requiring residency in the respective region.

Requirements

  • Procurement experience within large similar organizations.
  • Experience of strategic sourcing and category management.
  • An understanding of project management principles.
  • Experience of contract development, negotiating and managing supplier contractual arrangements.
  • Ability to make recommendations and amendments to existing contracts as well as drafting new ones.
  • Ability to manage stakeholder communications independently at all levels.
  • Ability to build and manage complex commercial assessment models.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of leading and influencing a large, devolved team.
  • Must have the ability to work without a need for current or future visa sponsorship.

  • Experience leading procurement activities for civil construction projects, including competitive sourcing, contract management, and stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement robust Category Strategies.
  • Engage and build strong working relationships with stakeholders to identify business needs.
  • Understand supply chains to offer the best solutions for National Grid.
  • Focus on a variety of direct buying activities within the US & UK global procurement team.
  • Help the business towards Net Zero targets.
  • Manage global suppliers and work in a global function.
  • Manage contracts end to end, from conception through to completion, identifying risks early, implementing mitigation plans, and maximizing opportunities to drive value.
  • Strengthen relationships, influence external stakeholders, and enhance National Grid’s reputation.
  • Role model excellence in procurement standards, mentoring and providing guidance to Buyers and Associate Buyers.
  • Act as the commercial lead on supplier contracts, providing expert commercial leadership to maximize contract efficiency, performance, and value.
  • Proactively build, develop, and maintain strong strategic partnerships with suppliers and contractors.
  • Partner with and coach suppliers to encourage new market entrants, supporting the availability of equipment that meets required standards of quality, cost, and performance.
  • Lead the implementation of Supplier and Contractor Performance Management processes, monitoring contract delivery, reporting on performance, analyzing KPIs and contract data, and escalating issues where required.
