About The Position

The intent of this posting is to fill a two (2)-year limited-term position and create an eligibility list that may be used to fill permanent and limited-term vacancies for the next two (2) years. SMUD is looking for a Senior Business Technology Analyst who is ready to help reinvent how business analysis work gets done. This role will use AI and automation to make process documentation, requirements gathering, analysis, and decision support faster, smarter, and more impactful across the organization. We are looking for someone with hands-on familiarity with large language models, including prompt design, skills, and tool calling, who is excited to turn emerging technology into practical results. This role will also help advance work in Energy Delivery and Operations by identifying data needs, uncovering gaps, and enabling insights that strengthen asset analysis, maintenance planning, and grid reliability. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Over five (5+) years of experience developing and supporting major information or business technology systems related to the business unit being supported.
  • Principles and practices of lead supervision; principles and techniques of project management principles; advanced principles and concepts of data management; specialized business unit work processes and fundamentals; complex concepts of IT system applications, including desktop, client-server and mainframe environments; centralized and distributed concepts; complex analytical methods and research techniques; methods and techniques of troubleshooting and problem resolution; principles of project planning and scheduling; complex system development life cycles; advanced business system design methods and techniques; advanced methods and techniques of application development and integration; advanced database design theory and implementation; principles of data retrieval and reporting; information processing hardware, software, and data communications; pertinent SMUD and departmental policies, procedures, and standards; office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Direct staff in a lead capacity; oversee complex IT system environments; prepare budget estimates and resource allocations; write functional design specifications, policy and reports documentation; conduct feasibility studies; provide effective consultation to users/clients; apply analytical thinking to resolve business and IT application problems; develop, test, and implement IT applications; learn new and existing IT technologies, tools and methods to support and develop business applications; translate technical terminology into non-technical terms; work independently or in a team atmosphere to develop and support IT business applications; manage and organize workload on several projects simultaneously; prepare reports and make presentations; communicate effectively orally and in writing internally/externally; establish and maintain effective working relationships internally/externally.

Responsibilities

  • Provides IT strategic, tactical, and operational planning to assigned business unit; plans and manages IT system; prepares and evaluates proposals to acquire and design business applications.
  • Manages IT controls and security for the business unit; manages contracts for business unit systems.
  • Prepares project budgets and monitors project costs.
  • Directs and oversees the work of assigned business unit staff in a lead capacity.
  • Acquires, designs, develops, modifies, tests, documents, implements and provides client training for business application solutions to meet business requirements using mainframe, PC, client server, and Intranet technologies.
  • Develops and maintains training courses and materials that support business processes; prepares course agendas and schedules and provides initial coaching and on--going support for user community.
  • Identifies and recommends opportunities to apply information technology to business unit functions and processes.
  • Maintains and modifies system table configurations to support on-going business needs.
  • Participates in or leads projects to reengineer business processes; serves as business unit contact/technical lead on enterprise application projects; plans or leads systems development projects.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves complex application software problems and issues for business unit applications; coordinates problem resolution activities between users, technical support staff and/or vendors.
  • Performs related duties as required.
