About The Position

The Senior Burn Crew Member (SBCM) works in a team environment and participates in prescribed fire operations, overseeing staff and volunteers during fire-related activities. These activities include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, and monitoring. The SBCM may also conduct other land management activities as assigned by the Fire Manager and Land Conservation Specialist. The role involves preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, pre- and post-burn monitoring, and other tasks while overseeing staff and volunteers. When conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire, the SBCM may perform other land management duties. As part of ongoing professional development, the SBCM will stay updated on new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. They will also work to build and maintain relationships within the professional fire community and the local community where the Conservancy operates. This may involve participating in prescribed fire activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state, and federal agencies. The position represents The Nature Conservancy’s Central Florida Ecosystem Restoration Team (ERT) and requires a positive attitude and strong fire practitioner skills. The role supports prescribed fire operations on conservation lands throughout Central Florida. This is a full-time, seasonal, hourly wage position with overtime pay after 40 hours per week. Lodging will be provided at either The Disney Wilderness Preserve or Tiger Creek Preserve.

Requirements

High school diploma.
Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) qualified, including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire Line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130).
Two seasons as a qualified FFT2 or agency equivalent.
Must achieve physical fitness standards of Arduous pack test as determined by the local Fire Program Manager and the TNC Fire Manual.
Experience operating various types of equipment (T6 engines, UTVs, ATVs, chainsaws, etc.).
Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g., First Aid, CPR).
Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

Nice To Haves

S-212 Wildland Chainsaw Training or equivalent
Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience
Experience managing volunteers or entry-level staff
Ability and willingness to work in a team environment
Two or more years of experience in fire operations related experience in land management or a similar field
Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Web browsers)
Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages

Responsibilities

Function as both leader and member of a work team under the supervision of the Land Conservation Specialist.
Act as crew lead and convey work instructions to the burn crew members.
Work as a team player in a high-stress environment.
Assist with all aspects of prescribed burning.
Maintain assigned equipment.
Perform other land management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire, including invasive species treatments and hardwood reduction projects.
Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
Operate 4x4 Trucks, ATVs, UTVs, tractors, chain saws, leaf blowers, trailers, and a variety of power tools.
Maintain accurate records of work time, expenses, and submit reports in a timely manner.
Keep abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials.
Build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community.
Participate in prescribed fire activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state, and federal agencies.
