About The Position

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Senior Building Official within the Building Department of the Climate Action, Planning and Development Services division. This role reports to the Manager of Building Services and involves 72 hours bi-weekly, starting as soon as possible. The Senior Building Official is a crucial technical position responsible for reviewing and inspecting Part 3 and Part 9 building and/or plumbing plans for various project types including commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-family residential. The primary goal is to ensure compliance with the BC Building Code, municipal bylaws, and applicable legislation. This position will lead complex plan reviews and inspections, offer technical guidance, and support the entire building permit and file-closure process. Additionally, the Senior Building Official will handle public inquiries, provide expert advice, and offer technical oversight and guidance to department staff.

Requirements

  • Two-year Building Technology, Engineering, or Construction Diploma (or related BC trade certification).
  • Registered Building Official (RBO).
  • 5-7 years of experience as a Level 3 Building Official or Registered Building Official.
  • Experience in plan review and inspection.
  • Experience researching, interpreting, and applying bylaws, regulations, and codes.
  • Experience in local or regional government building and development operations.
  • Excellent knowledge of the BC Building Code, National Building Code, BC Fire Code, applicable NFPA standards, municipal building bylaw, zoning bylaw, and Workers Compensation Regulations relating to Part 3 and Part 9.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Architects and Engineers Acts.
  • Ability to provide recommendations and guidance on interpretation of codes, bylaws, technical data, and permit process.
  • Professional, analytical, and organized individual.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively identify, analyze, and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing demands.

  • Valid BC class 5 driver’s license.
  • Satisfactory driver’s abstract.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing and inspecting Part 3 and Part 9 building and/or plumbing plans including commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi-family residential projects.
  • Ensuring compliance with the BC Building Code, municipal bylaws, and applicable legislation.
  • Leading complex plan reviews and inspections.
  • Providing technical guidance to the team and stakeholders.
  • Supporting the full building permit and file-closure process.
  • Responding to enquiries and providing advice to the public.
  • Providing technical oversight and guidance to members of the department.
  • Presenting or facilitating meetings or events providing technical leadership and oversight.
