About The Position

This position determines the structural ratings of structures on the state highway system based on calculated safe load carrying capacities. The incumbent recommends approval/disapproval of overload permits by the department for the operation of vehicles or loads that exceed the legal maximum dimensions and weights as well as for construction overloads and requests for addition of overlays. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Senior Bridge Ratings Engineer. Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR Current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Four years of experience in civil engineering.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Requires occasional statewide travel with overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of structural engineering with special emphasis on bridge load rating, design, construction, maintenance, and inspection.
  • Current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Bridge Inspection Certification of Program Manager or Team Leader in the state of Illinois.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers and the public.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Determines the load ratings and load carrying capacities for structures located on the state highway system.
  • Recommends approval/disapproval of overload permits, construction overloads, and requests for additional overlay as well as related load restrictions.
  • Identifies AASHTOWare Bridge Rating (BrR) system limitations and recommends necessary enhancements.
  • Utilizes additional computer programs including structural analysis and design software such as STAAD, LARS, and MIDAS to modify data for desired results.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
