Senior Bioinformatics Scientist

Nautilus Biotechnology•San Carlos, CA
•$126,000 - $182,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Nautilus is developing a single-molecule protein analysis platform intended to expand access to proteomic insights. The Senior Bioinformatics Scientist will own the analysis side of a new assay modality, working closely with experimentalists to troubleshoot and optimize protocols, analyze data produced by the platform, interpret findings, and recommend next steps. The role will also build an analysis pipeline for the new data type and work with R&D leadership to frame findings and communicate progress and risks. The position reports to a Bioinformatics Fellow and is based in San Carlos, California, with at least three days per week in the office. The role suits an applied, hands-on scientist who makes progress with imperfect information, takes initiative, and partners closely with experimental teams.

Requirements

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Biostatistics, or a related quantitative field.
  • At least 4 years of industry experience.
  • Track record as an applied, hands-on scientist who makes progress with imperfect information, tackles unfamiliar territory, and removes obstacles.
  • Hands-on experience analyzing wet-lab experimental data and a demonstrated record of assay development or optimization in close partnership with experimental teams.
  • Ability to own a project end to end, from experimental design and analysis through interpretation and recommendations.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including framing results for leadership and explaining technical findings to non-computational audiences.
  • Solid foundation in applied statistics, including distributions and variability, hypothesis testing, and experimental design.
  • Proficiency in Python, including tools such as pandas, NumPy, and SciPy, and SQL; experience building durable pipelines and dashboards as well as conducting rapid one-off analyses.
  • Comfort working across local machines, shared servers, and cloud environments such as AWS, including Linux, Git, and managing access credentials.
  • Ability to contribute to an organized, dynamic team in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on wet-lab experience.
  • Experience with proteomics, fluorescence imaging, single-molecule methods, instrument development, or affinity reagents.
  • Experience with probabilistic modeling of stochastic data or protein structural modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with experimentalists to develop and optimize a new assay format, including designing experiments, selecting conditions to vary, defining success metrics, and recommending next steps based on results.
  • Troubleshoot protocols by forming and testing hypotheses involving sample preparation, reagents, fluidics, imaging, and data processing.
  • Analyze and integrate data across platform modalities, including images, fluidics readouts, fluorescence signals, and decoded single-molecule outputs.
  • Interpret results, assess confidence, recommend next steps, and work with R&D leadership to frame findings, communicate progress and risks, and inform project direction.
  • Design and build an analysis pipeline, quality-control metrics, and dashboards for the new data type, balancing rapid one-off analyses with tested, reusable tools.
  • Collaborate with the bioinformatics team to develop analytical and statistical approaches for interpreting stochastic single-molecule measurements.
  • Locate and access assay data in cloud databases, object storage, on-premises file servers, and raw instrument output; write code to parse instrument metadata and manage cloud access as needed.
