Senior Backend & Infrastructure Engineer-Full Time (US /LATAM)

Very Good Ventures
$198,000 - $220,000Remote

About The Position

Very Good Ventures (VGV) is a global consultancy specializing in delivering elegant solutions with disruptive technologies. VGV is a product consultancy with engagements across various clients, stacks, and constraints, focusing heavily on cloud infrastructure and AI agents/infrastructure. This role requires an individual who can quickly adapt to new projects and technologies, maintain credibility, and manage projects from initial sales conversations to production deployment. This is a consulting role demanding deep engineering expertise, where the individual will lead the backend, infrastructure, and agentic-infrastructure practice, represent this expertise to clients, and contribute to coding. It is not a heads-down platform role at a single product company, but rather an opportunity to shape a practice, build client trust, gain exposure to multiple projects, and write impactful code.

Requirements

  • 8+ years as a Backend or Full Stack Engineer, with a strong emphasis on DevOPps, programmatic infrastructure, or Site Reliability Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience building and scaling production AI-powered services or agents; systems that ran in production are required, not just prototypes.
  • Deep expertise in infrastructure-as-code and cloud resource management, with an understanding of principles applicable across different tools and vendors.
  • Strong experience with at least one major cloud platform (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
  • A track record of designing and scaling production backends, building custom services, and effectively utilizing cloud managed services.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with feature-flagging and staged rollouts.
  • Experience implementing and running observability, logging, and alerting systems.
  • Comfortable operating in fast-paced environments with evolving requirements.
  • Comfortable operating in a client-facing consultancy environment, having represented an engineering practice to external stakeholders (e.g., consultancy, agency, forward-deployed, solutions architect).
  • Ability to establish organizational-level standards or practices and drive their adoption.
  • Confident, fluent written and spoken English, with the ability to command a room and translate technical concepts for non-technical executives.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from one or more cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
  • Anthropic or other AI certification (e.g., Claude Certified Architect Foundations).
  • Public technical credibility through talks, writing, teaching, or open-source leadership.
  • Experience at a consultancy or agency.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the credible technical voice in pre-sales and client conversations, helping to scope engagements, shape technical direction, and set achievable expectations.
  • Partner with business development and leadership to estimate work, phase delivery, and manage margin and delivery risk on fixed budgets and deadlines.
  • Define and evolve VGV’s backend, infrastructure, and agentic-infrastructure practice, setting standards, patterns, and reusable approaches.
  • Translate technical decisions for non-technical stakeholders, focusing on business outcomes and risk.
  • Deliver quality across simultaneous engagements with varying requirements and constraints, and rapidly learn new technology stacks.
  • Design, build, deploy, and scale production AI agents and their supporting infrastructure.
  • Establish patterns for observability, cost control, safety, and reliability specific to agentic systems.
  • Design, implement, and manage cloud infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code tooling (e.g., Terraform, OpenTofu).
  • Build staged development environments and CI/CD pipelines for rapid, reliable, and automated deployments.
  • Own observability, monitoring, logging, and alerting for performance, usage, and security.
  • Set best practices for security, compliance, and cost optimization across cloud deployments.
  • Build, deploy, and scale backend (micro)services with a focus on high-availability and resilience.
  • Design and maintain backend APIs and integration services, demonstrating strong API design judgment across REST, GraphQL, and gRPC.
  • Apply backend architectural patterns appropriately and explain the trade-offs involved.
  • Collaborate with front-end teams on integrations and performance.
