About The Position

Langfuse, now part of ClickHouse, is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to make its open-source platform fast, reliable, and affordable at scale. Langfuse ingests terabytes of AI tracing data per day, and this role will own and improve the infrastructure behind that workload. The engineer will operate Langfuse Cloud across multiple production environments and help make self-hosting straightforward, from Docker Compose to enterprise-grade Helm chart deployments. The role focuses on the ingestion pipeline, ClickHouse schemas and queries, and backend abstractions that enable product engineers to build data-heavy features. It also includes developing infrastructure-heavy capabilities, testing changes against real production data, and anticipating infrastructure needs as the product and its workloads grow. The engineer will work with a small, accountable team and can collaborate with ClickHouse’s database engineering team. The position is remote-friendly at a globally distributed company.

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering skills and enthusiasm for database internals, query optimization, and distributed systems.
  • Enjoyment of working with large volumes of data.
  • Experience with analytical databases, data pipelines, or high-throughput event processing.
  • Ability to read and write TypeScript and SQL.
  • Self-directed approach to organizing work, with strong opinions about what to build and how to ship it.
  • Interest in open-source software and enjoyment of discussing users’ scaling challenges.
  • Ability to thrive in a small, accountable team where individual contributions are visible.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ClickHouse; it is a plus but not required.
  • Experience with other OLAP databases or observability infrastructure.
  • Experience building data-intensive systems at scale.
  • Former founder.
  • A computer science or quantitative degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own and optimize the tracing-data ingestion pipeline for throughput, latency, reliability, and cost efficiency.
  • Design ClickHouse schemas and optimize merge strategies, batch inserts, and analytical queries that power dashboards and the user interface.
  • Build backend abstractions that help product engineers deliver data-heavy features without rebuilding common infrastructure.
  • Build infrastructure for features such as LLM-as-a-Judge processing, large-scale alerting, client-code execution, and batch dataset operations.
  • Operate Langfuse Cloud across multiple production environments and support deployments ranging from Docker Compose to enterprise-grade Helm charts.
  • Evaluate schema, migration, and query changes using load tests and production data, including parallel testing on real traffic.
  • Plan for scaling infrastructure as product directions and data workloads grow.
  • Optionally contribute to frontend work on infrastructure-heavy features.

Benefits

  • Employer contributions toward healthcare.
  • Stock options for every new team member.
  • Flexible time off in the US and generous time-off entitlement in other countries.
  • $500 home-office setup allowance for remote employees.
  • Opportunities to connect with colleagues at company-wide offsites.
  • Flexible, remote-friendly work environment.
