Senior Backend Engineer - Asset Sales
About The Position
Join our expanding engineering team as a permanent Senior Backend Engineer in the Asset Sales group. This role focuses on scaling a critical part of M-KOPA's FinTech platform by building distributed, event-driven microservices and contributing to the development of AI-native engineering practices. The work directly supports systems that provide smartphones and e-motorbikes to customers across Africa, with a mission to expand financial inclusion for under-banked populations. The company has been recognized for its rapid growth and is a fully distributed organization with teams across the UK, Europe, and Africa.
Requirements
- Strong grasp of C# and .NET development.
- Experience with event-driven systems (e.g., Azure Service Bus, Kafka, RabbitMQ).
- Microservices architecture experience, ideally on Azure and Kubernetes.
- Experience using observability tooling (e.g., Grafana, Application Insights) to understand production behavior.
- Comfort using AI tools as part of a daily engineering workflow (design, code review, testing, incident investigation).
- DevOps culture mindset, including on-call/production ownership.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively in distributed teams across time zones.
- Continuous learning mindset and openness to feedback.
Responsibilities
- Build and operate distributed C# and .NET microservices on Azure within an event-driven architecture at significant scale.
- Own services end-to-end, from idea generation through implementation, deployment, production, and iteration.
- Tinker with and experiment with new AI tools, agents, and workflows, sharing findings with the team.
- Contribute to the development of automated tests, SLOs, alerting, observability, and deployment safeguards.
- Design for idempotency, retries, out-of-order events, and failure modes, understanding service behavior in production.
- Operate systems, using incidents as feedback to improve platform resilience.
- Collaborate effectively in distributed teams across time zones.
