About The Position

TELUS Digital is seeking a hands-on Senior AWS Application Engineer to design, build, and ship serverless applications and APIs on AWS for enterprise clients. The engineer owns technical delivery of cloud-native solutions from design through production, writing high-quality code, defining infrastructure as code, and applying AWS best practices for security, scalability, and cost efficiency. The role works alongside architects, product teams, clients, and other stakeholders to turn business problems into reliable systems, lead client engagements, mentor engineers, and help shape engineering standards across the Cloud Engineering practice. The position can be performed remotely in the United States or Canada, or from a listed North American office: Charlottesville, Virginia; Durham, North Carolina; Columbus, Ohio; Boston, Massachusetts; Toronto, Ontario; or Vancouver, British Columbia. Travel to contact center and client locations may be required, up to 25%. Amazon Connect and contact center experience are beneficial, while deep AWS serverless expertise is central to the role.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 4 years building and operating production applications on AWS.
  • Hands-on expertise with AWS serverless services, including Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, EventBridge, SQS, SNS, DynamoDB, and S3.
  • Strong Python or Node.js/TypeScript programming skills and experience designing and building scalable APIs and event-driven architectures.
  • Proficiency with infrastructure as code such as AWS CDK, CloudFormation, SAM, or Terraform, and CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or AWS CodePipeline.
  • Strong understanding of AWS security practices, including IAM, Cognito, KMS, Secrets Manager, and network security fundamentals.
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, and tracing in distributed systems using CloudWatch, X-Ray, or similar tools.
  • Knowledge of software design principles, testing strategies, and performance optimization in cloud-native environments.
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort working directly with clients in a consulting or professional services environment.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to client locations.

Nice To Haves

  • AWS Developer Associate, Solutions Architect Associate, or Solutions Architect Professional certification.
  • Experience with Amazon Connect, contact center solutions, or conversational AI services such as Amazon Lex, Amazon Bedrock, or Amazon Q.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build scalable, event-driven serverless applications using AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, EventBridge, SQS, SNS, and DynamoDB.
  • Design, implement, and document secure, well-versioned RESTful and GraphQL APIs, with attention to performance, authentication, and developer experience.
  • Write clean, maintainable, tested Python or Node.js/TypeScript code, including unit and integration tests, code reviews, and documentation.
  • Define and manage environments using infrastructure as code and build CI/CD pipelines for safe, repeatable releases.
  • Apply AWS Well-Architected principles, least-privilege IAM, encryption, and secrets management; instrument systems with monitoring, tracing, and structured logging.
  • Optimize serverless workload latency, concurrency, and cost; troubleshoot production issues and drive continuous improvement.
  • Participate in client discovery and design sessions, translate requirements into technical solutions, provide estimates, and communicate progress and risks.
  • Guide junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical direction; contribute reusable patterns, accelerators, and engineering standards.
  • Integrate AWS solutions with third-party and enterprise platforms, including CRM, ticketing, and contact center systems such as Amazon Connect where applicable.
