About The Position

The County of Riverside's Purchasing and Fleet Department is seeking a Senior Automotive Mechanic to join the Fleet Services Division at the garage located on Orange Street in Riverside. The Senior Automotive Mechanic will be responsible for the full scope of diagnostic, troubleshooting, and complex mechanical repair work for a fleet of vehicles. This includes identifying and resolving engine knocks, unusual noises, and mechanical failures, as well as diagnosing and repairing issues involving transaxles, transmissions, and differentials. Work will be performed on a variety of gasoline and alternative fuel-powered automobiles and light trucks. In addition, the Senior Automotive Mechanic will lead and train other mechanics and perform installations of smog devices and other specialized vehicle equipment, and perform other duties as needed. Competitive candidates will have experience utilizing fleet management systems, with FASTER fleet management software preferred, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook and Excel, for tracking repairs, maintaining service records, and communicating effectively. Experience in a lead or supervisory capacity is highly desirable, including the ability to provide guidance, training, and technical support to other mechanics. Previous automotive maintenance experience in a public sector or government fleet environment is also preferred, particularly experience maintaining a diverse fleet of vehicles while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. This position follows a 9/80 work schedule, with hours of 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Requirements

  • Two years as a journey level automotive mechanic.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license Class “C” or higher is required at the time of application.
  • Unlimited Smog License and Brake Adjuster's License is required.
  • Selected applicants will be required to provide their own personal hand tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience utilizing fleet management systems, with FASTER fleet management software preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook and Excel.
  • Experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Previous automotive maintenance experience in a public sector or government fleet environment.
  • Experience maintaining a diverse fleet of vehicles while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Candidates without current valid Unlimited Smog and/or Brake Adjuster's Licenses who are selected to fill this position classification have one year from the time of appointment to obtain this/these licenses.

Responsibilities

  • Estimates time and materials needed for a variety of repair work; requisitions materials and supplies; and assists in the training of less experienced mechanics and service workers.
  • Performs the more difficult mechanical repairs; diagnoses motor knocks, noises or failures; diagnoses transaxle, transmission, and differential failures; interprets computer command control fault codes; reads, comprehends, and follows electrical and mechanical schematics.
  • Performs installation of smog devices and special equipment on vehicles.
  • Performs random quality assurance inspections on completed vehicle repairs; inspects the garage for safety violations; and conducts monthly safety meetings as directed.
  • Assumes responsibility of the garage in the absence of the Automotive Services Supervisor.
